The Children's Hospital and Institute of Child Health Lahore is the largest tertiary care public sector Children’s hospital in the country. The institution is providing comprehensive free care to thousands of indigent pediatric patients from all over the country.
The Institute of Child Health is providing post graduate training to very large number of doctors in multiple disciplines as well as conducting research projects. The institute also encompasses the School of Nursing and the School of Allied Health Sciences.
The Pakistan Paediatric Association conceived the idea of The Institute of Child Health in 1984. The important mile stones are:

SERVICES: The hospital takes pride in being unique public sector hospital providing free treatment to all admitted patients including cardiac surgery, haematology oncology and renal dialysis. There are 26 in-patient and 07 outpatient-based specialty services. A system of Clinical Governance with weekly audit of all hospital mortalities ensures a continuous improvement in the clinical care offered to patients. Robust evaluation and quality management enforce this and other pillars of clinical governance. The Institution was evaluated by the Punjab Health care Commission and declared as best managed public sector hospital in the province scoring over 99% in all indicators.
DIAGNOSTIC FACILITIES:
Pathology Services: The pathology services include Chemical Pathology, Haematology, Histopathology, Immunology, Genetics and Microbiology.
Radiology services: The first MRI in public sector was installed at The Children’s Hospital in June 2000 and hospital has recently installed a new MR with cardiac MRA. In addition to general radiology (Digital X-Rays and Fluoroscopy), the services include Color Doppler Ultrasound and CT scan.
Hospital Waste Management and Incineration Program: The hospital has its own on-site waste management and incineration unit working round the clock.
THE SCHOOL OF NURSING:
The hospital has its own school of nursing even before its inception since 1984 and till to date more than thousands of nurses have graduated from this school. It is a unique as students of this school get a special exposure to paediatric patients and is now serving in all parts of the country.
THE INSTITUTE OF CHILD HEALTH:
POSTGRADUATE TRAINING:
The level 1 fellowship (FCPS) and MD/MS programs are being run in General Paediatrics, Paediatric Surgery, Radiology, Haematology, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Anaesthesia and Orthodontics. In total there are over 374 PG trainee slots for the level 1-fellowship programs and over 200 trainees have passed FCPS, MD and MS in various disciplines.
2nd Fellowship:
The Institute takes pride in being the first institute in the country recognized by College of Physicians and Surgeons for 2nd fellowship (level-IV) in the disciplines of Paediatric Cardiology, Developmental Paediatrics, Paediatric Gastroenterology & Hepatology, Paediatric Haematology/Oncology, Paediatric Nephrology, Paediatric Neurology and Neonatology.
In total there are 56-second fellowship trainee slots in the institution and 30 trainees have passed FCPS in paediatric cardiology, neonatology, neurology, nephrology, haematology/oncology and gastroentrology from this institution.
SCHOOL OF ALLIED HEALTH SCIENCES: SAHS has the honor of being the first institution in Pakistanto start professional degree courses in different disciplines of Allied Health Sciences. School is offering BSc. (Hons.) courses in seven different disciplines which are so vitally needed for every health facility.
RESEARCH: The Institution has its own Institutional review board & Research and publication committee. Various observational and interventional studies are in progress and a large number of papers and case reports have been published in national and international indexed journals. The institution has embarked upon the concept of a Research Incubator in collaboration with University of Lancashire.
Collaboration: There is bilateral exchange of teachers, trainers, specialists, nurses and technologists with various institutions. The hospital is officially twinned with The Royal Hospital for Children, Glasgow UK and has collaboration with other institutions like Birmingham Children Hospital UK, University of Central Lancashire, UK, Gleeson Lab U.S.A., University of Manchester, UK, Children Cancer & Leukemia Group UK and University of Colombo, Lady Ridgeway Hospital, Sri Lanka
