Typhoid Fever in Children – What Parents Must Know
Typhoid fever is a serious bacterial infection caused by Salmonella typhi.
It is common in countries with unsafe water and poor sanitation and mainly affects school-going children.
How Typhoid Spreads
Drinking contaminated water
Eating unhygienic street food
Poor hand hygiene
Contact with an infected person
Common Symptoms
Persistent high fever (often > 5–7 days)
Weakness and body aches
Abdominal pain
Poor appetite
Diarrhea or constipation
Headache
Sometimes rash (rose spots)
Why Typhoid is Dangerous
If untreated, it can cause:
⚠️ Intestinal bleeding or perforation
⚠️ Severe dehydration
⚠️ Sepsis
⚠️ Prolonged illness and school absence
Diagnosis
Blood culture (gold standard)
Other supportive tests (as advised by doctor)
Treatment
✅ Appropriate antibiotics prescribed by a doctor
✅ Adequate fluids and nutrition
✅ Complete the full course of medicine
❌ Avoid self-medication and incomplete treatment (causes drug resistance)
Prevention is the Best Protection
✔ Drink boiled or filtered water
✔ Wash hands before eating
✔ Avoid unsafe street food
✔ Use clean toilets
✔ Typhoid vaccination for children (strongly recommended)
