What is health diplomacy? Health diplomacy is an approach that uses diplomatic strategies to address global health challenges. Main focus of the health diplomacy is to improve health outcomes and relationship between nations. It involves various actors like government, international organisations, civil society and private sector as well. Diplomatic tools and processes play crucial role in developing and implementing global health policies and frameworks that can help strengthen the relationship between nations through shared health challenges.
Conditions like war should not disrupt health diplomacy because these times demand policies which ensure medical care on humanitarian grounds should go as routine despite nations being on war with each other. According to international humanitarian law (IHL), health establishments and units, including hospitals, should not be attacked. This protection extends to the wounded and sick as well as to medical staff and means of transport.
We have seen recent few wars between neighbouring countries. Russia-Ukraine, Israel-Palestine and recent Indo-Pak war. With these wars we also witnessed some of international laws being violated during armed conflicts. Multiple human rights report mentioned attacks of Russia on healthcare facilities, clinics and ambulances including children hospital. Israel bombing hospitals in Gaza on few occasions. After recent escalation, Pakistani passport holders who were in India for their treatment were sent back. All these examples highlight the importance of even stronger health diplomacy policies because medical care should not wait or disrupt because of the armed conflicts. Patient comes first.
