🔶Senna is most often used as a laxative, either to relieve constipation or in some cases, to help with weight loss. It is also an ingredient in some conventional over-the-counter laxatives.
🔶The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have approved senna as a non-prescription drug to treat constipation.
Senna has some anti microbial and anti inflammatory properties. It contains different antioxidants and phytochemicals. People are using it in tea for treating covid-19.
🔶But before using Senna we should know it’s doses, drug interactions and some possible side effects.
The most common doses are:
🔶Children: 8.5 milligrams (mg) per day
Children over 12 and adults: 17.2 mg per day, with no more than 34.4 mg each day
Older adults: 17 mg per day
Postpartum pregnancy: 28 mg per day, divided into two doses.
🔶Senna is LIKELY SAFE for most adults and children over age 2 when taken by mouth, short-term. Senna can cause some side effects including stomach discomfort, cramps, and diarrhea.
🔶Senna is POSSIBLY UNSAFE when taken by mouth long-term or in high doses. Don't use senna for more than two weeks. Longer use can cause the bowels to stop functioning normally and might cause dependence on laxatives.
