Management for dyspraxia
Dyspraxia (Developmental Coordination Disorder, DCD) management focuses on improving motor skills, coordination, and daily functioning. Since it often coexists with other conditions like ADHD or speech disorders, a multidisciplinary approach is ideal.
1. Occupational Therapy (OT)
Fine motor skills: Activities like writing, cutting, buttoning clothes, and using utensils.
Gross motor skills: Balancing, jumping, and climbing exercises.
Hand-eye coordination: Catching/throwing games, puzzles, and tracing activities.
Sensory integration therapy: Helps with sensory sensitivities and motor planning.
2. Physiotherapy
Strengthening exercises to improve posture and muscle tone.
Coordination and balance training (e.g., walking on different surfaces, obstacle courses).
Core stability exercises to support better movement control.
3. Speech and Language Therapy (if needed)
If dyspraxia affects oral-motor skills, speech therapy can help with pronunciation, fluency, and articulation.
4. Educational Support
Individualized Education Plan (IEP) or accommodations at school.
Assistive tools like pencil grips, typing instead of writing, or voice-to-text software.
Extra time for tasks and exams.
5. Cognitive and Behavioral Strategies
Breaking down tasks into smaller steps.
Repetition and consistent practice to reinforce skills.
Social skills training if there are communication difficulties.
6. Home-Based Activities & Parental Support
Play-based learning (e.g., building blocks, crafts, puzzles).
Encouraging structured routines and step-by-step instructions.
Patience and positive reinforcement to build confidence.
