Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. Here are some facts about glaucoma:

1. It is commonly known as the “Silent thief of vision” because it has no symptoms in the early stages of the disease.

2. It commonly affects people after the age of 40 BUT it can affect people of all age groups.

3. If there is a family history of glaucoma, chances of family members developing glaucoma increase by three times!

4. About 50% of the people do not know that they have glaucoma. A simple detailed eye examination can change that.

5. Most cases are caused by increased pressure inside the eye which damages the nerve of the eye i.e. Optic Nerve. But sometimes glaucoma develops even when the pressures are not very high.

6. Studies tell us that people who have hypertension or diabetes are at increased risk of developing glaucoma.

7. Early diagnosis can help in management of glaucoma.
