Prevention of Blindness Trust (POB Trust) was established in July, 2007 with an aim to provide free of cost eye care services to poor patients especially in remote areas without any discrimination.
Over 250 leading eye surgeons supported by highly qualified paramedics staffs from all over Pakistan are rendering invaluable services voluntarily for poor masses especially belonging to far flung neglected areas.
Besides working in 58 districts of Pakistan, POB Trust is also engaged in relief activities in poverty hit and expertise lacking African nations like Sudan, Chad, Somalia, Nigeria, Mali, Senegal, Niger, and Burkina Faso, Zimbabwe etc. One million, three hundred and ten thousand patients have been examined in OPD. Over One hundred and forty thousand IOL implanted surgeries have been carried out successfully.
Free eye camps in Indonesia, Bangladesh, Gaza, Palestine and Sri Lanka are also arranged.
Moreover, POB Trust has gone a step further to provide training to doctors of above mentioned African countries and Middle Eastern countries such as Egypt, Jordan, Palestine etc. In order to make them self sufficient and work independently. POB Trust started a clinical ophthalmology diploma course and a Masters Degree in Ophthalmology in Somali land with WHO, FIMA, Health department Somali land and University of Hargeisa Somali land collaboration. Teachers, curriculum and technical facilities are provided by POB Trust.
POB Trusts have so far visited 17 different jails in Pakistan to examine the prisoners. Besides, providing medicine and vision glasses, surgeries have also been carried out.
Under School Health Care Program, POB Trust visits different schools. Each and every child is examined and the needful is done on the spot. Surgery cases are referred to the nearest hospital. More than 7000 children of Government and Private schools examined with near vision glasses provision. Annual Free Squint & Ptosis camp held in district Vehari for children.
Those who are suffering from permanent vision loss are provided with computer operating training so that they could find a respectable source of income.
POB Trust decided to establish permanent eye care facilities in main cities of Pakistan. Land purchased for eye hospital in Lahore, Karachi and Peshawar, regarding this process POB Eye Hospital Karachi was inaugurated in 2015. POB Eye Hospital, Karachi is providing Free OPDs and Surgeries on daily basis with state of the art facilities and equipment.
