Why do some people stay driven while others lose momentum halfway through? The answer isn’t just “willpower.” it’s psychology.
Decades of research show that self-motivation comes from meeting three psychological needs:

1. Autonomy (a sense of control over what we do)
2. Competence (the belief that our efforts make us effective)
3. Relatedness (feeling connected to others in the process).

This framework is known as Self-Determination Theory (SDT), developed by psychologists Deci & Ryan (1985, 2000). Their work demonstrates that intrinsic motivation (doing something because it’s personally meaningful) is more sustainable than external rewards alone. In a longitudinal study, Deci, Vallerand, Pelletier & Ryan (1991) found that students with intrinsic motivation showed higher persistence, creativity and psychological well-being compared to those driven mainly by external rewards.

Motivation is not a fixed trait. It’s a process shaped by how we set goals, perceive our abilities and connect with meaning. As psychologists, coaches and leaders, we can foster motivation by creating environments that nurture autonomy, competence and connection.

Anxious thoughts have a way of feeling loud and true, even when they’re not.

These 4 CBT-based affirmations are reminders I keep coming back to. Not because they magically “fix” anxiety, but because they help ground me in reality when my brain starts spiraling.

If your thoughts have been heavy lately, I hope these give you a moment of calm.
