It has been five years to that August afternoon which came and took Sir away, leaving us in its wake, bewildered and broken. Five years! Some days go by with just a passing thought or two while some days the grief is nearly fresh enough to be new. Often a times, the thought interjects had it been otherwise, we could’ve had five more years with Sir; five more years spent in the shadow of his wisdom, his affection, his reprimands; five more years spent secure in the knowledge of his comforting presence in the background to fall back upon whenever we stumbled, to tide us over in our times of confusion. So many could-haves…
But then we shake away the thought and plough on as he would have expected from us. To stand up tall and face life with all its confusion and all its challenges head-on. To keep on working and giving it our very best no matter the circumstances. Those who knew him well, know that he would never have wished us and all his loved ones to dwell on his loss. So much has happened in these five years, here and around the world. Such dark times and horrors abound but we plough on with twice as much courage and determination as fear and uncertainty only because we were taught and trained by the very best.
Today would have been Sir’s 70th birthday. He wouldn’t have wanted us to make a big deal about it. But we would’ve argued with him: surely turning 70 is a milestone that deserves to be celebrated. He did not get to celebrate turning 70. In this world, Sir remains forever 64. But today, we celebrate our dearly beloved Sir and offer our gratitude to Allah for the time that we got to spend with him. We look back and think of how he always carried himself, with dignity, in the truest sense of the word, his mannerism exuding such confidence. We remember the passion he had for his work and the love he had for his country and its people, over and above everything. We so wish we can emulate him as a teacher, as the finest doctor, an encouraging leader and so much more. We know we can only try because only he could do all what he did and all that he was. There could only ever be just one Faisal Masud.
Regards
