MIASMATIC PICTURE ACCORDING TO THE ORGANON OF HOMEOPATHY THE HEALING ART.
§ 82 §
Although, by the discovery of that great source of chronic diseases, as also by the discovery of the specific homoeopathic remedies for the psora, medicine has advanced some steps nearer to a knowledge of the nature of the majority of diseases it has to cure, yet, for settling the indication in each case of chronic (psoric) disease he is called on to cure, the duty of a careful apprehension of its ascertainable symptoms and characteristics is as indispensable for the homoeopathic physician as it was before that discovery, as no real cure of this or of other diseases can take place without a strict particular treatment (individualization) of each case of disease - only that in this investigation some difference is to be made when the affection is an acute and rapidly developed disease, and when it is a chronic one; seeing that, in acute disease, the chief symptoms strike us and become evident to the senses more quickly, and hence much less time is requisite for tracing the picture of the disease and much fewer questions are required to be asked1, as almost everything is self-evident, than in a chronic disease which has been gradually progressing for several years, in which the symptoms are much more difficult to be ascertained.
Kent (72-82): Psora is the beginning of all physical sickness. Had psora not been established upon the human race, the other two chronic diseases would have been impossible, and susceptibility to acute diseases would have been impossible. All the diseases of man are built upon psora ; hence it is the foundation of sickness; all other sicknesses come afterwards. Psora is the underlying cause, and it is the primitive or the primary disorder of the human race. It is a disordered state of the internal economy of the human race. This state expresses itself in the form of the various chronic diseases. If we regard psora as synonymous with the itch, we fail to understand, and fail to express thereby, anything like the original intention of Hahnemann. It required 12 years for Hahnemann to discover and gather together the evidence upon which he came to his conclusions. At the present day, as you are now prepared to hear, we can really learn more about psora by watching it in its backward progress than by watching it in its onward progress in any disease. It is the cause of the chronic manifestation that is not syphilitic or sycotic.
We are able to group together in the mind all those vicious constitutional states that are called organic disease as the source of psora. The common chronic diseases of the liver are not diseases, but the localisation of psora in the liver ; the lung diseases and heart diseases and brain diseases are not diseases, because they have one single origin(Psora).
The state of the human mind and the state of the human body, is a state of susceptibility to disease from willing evils, from thinking that is false and which makes life one continuous heredity of false things, and so this form of disease, psora, is but an outward manifestation of that which is prior in man. If psora could be brought back in a series to its simple state the external of the body would become wonderfully bad to look at, but the internal would be in a much better state. The vesicular eruptions that come are sometimes dreadful to look upon, horrible in proportion to the vanity of the patient, but these must be evolved and then wonderful good comes to the economy.Hereditary states roll out in these manifestations, internal evils flow into external manifestations and homeopathy continues to drive them outward and outward, thereby leaving the economy in a state of comparative freedom.
We learn much about the syphilitic miasm under the action of homeopathic remedies. At the end of the prodromal period, we may expect the chancre; at the end of six weeks or so, we may expect the external manifestations, the roseola and other eruptions; soon succeeding these at their time of disappearance, or in connection with them, we have the mucous patches in the throat, ulcers in the throat and finally the falling of the hair. If we observe the syphilitic miasm in its backward progress we will trace it back in its stages supposing they had been suppressed. In the earlier stage the homeopathic treatment strikes at the root of the evil, and will take hold of that which would become latent, and will so turn things into order that the chancre that is painful will become painless, will continue on as a mild and harmless sore.
It is not known that there are two kinds of gonorrhoea, one that is essentially chronic, having no disposition to recovery and one that is acute having a tendency to recover after a few weeks or months. They are both contagious. Most of the sycotic cases which are brought before the physician at the present time are those that are suppressed and they have a dozen times more grievous than when in the primary stage. All medicines that are capable of producing the image of sycosis may be called anti-sycotics, but we can put it in this way also, and say all those remedies are anti-sycotic which when given to a sycotic case in its advanced state are able to turn the disease backward, to reproduce the earlier form and bring back the discharge. If you know that a patient is a sycotic patient, he must have an anti-sycotic remedy, if a syphilitic patient, he must have an anti-syphilitic, if neither of these miasms are present, a remedy looking towards his anti-psoric state will cause him to rally. Now, you have a general survey of the chronic miasms.
