The Department of Psychiatry, King Edward Medical University organized a session for medical students titled "Pakistan or abroad? Career options for doctors" at AV conference room in Patiala block, King Edward Medical University on February 26, 2025.

The session was co-chaired by Prof. M. Moin, Professor of Ophthalmology, Principal, College of Ophthalmology and Allied Vision Sciences and Pro-Vice Chancellor, KEMU and Prof. Abrar Ashraf, Professor of Surgery, Dean Allied Health Sciences and Director Medical Education KEMU. Joining the distinguished panel were Dr. Mumraiz Naqshband, Associate Professor of Orthopedic Surgery and Dr. Khaula Tariq, Senior Registrar, Department of Psychiatry, KEMU. Prof. Dr. Ali Madeeh Hashmi, Chairman Department of Psychiatry moderated the session which was attended by a large number of medical students as well as house officers and PG trainees.

Prof. Abrar Ashraf described in detail the effort KEMU is making in collaboration with College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan to enhance and streamline both undergraduate and post-graduate medical education in Pakistan nationally and internationally. Students and trainees from Pakistan are now regularly visiting other countries to enhance and upgrade their medical knowledge including Gulf countries, Ireland, UK, USA and Canada. Efforts are underway to develop links in New Zealand and Australia as well to open up more opportunities for Pakistani doctors.
Prof. Moin compared and constrasted post graduate training in Pakistan, UK and USA and provided tips to the attendees on how to choose the best options starting in medical college.

Dr. Mumraiz described his experience of attending medical college in New Zealand followed by post-graduate training in UK and Australia and shared his impressions about those countries and how they compared to Pakistan in training as well as for personal reasons.

Dr. Khaula Tariq shared her experience of having done USMLE and living in the US followed by her decision to come back to Pakistan for family reasons and doing FCPS. She pointed out the special challenges faced by women in the medical profession and encouraged all the women medical students to pursue their dreams with hard work and passion.

The attendees participated enthusiastically and asked questions from the speakers. The session ended with a vote of thanks by Prof. Ali Madeeh Hashmi to all the speakers for giving their valuable time to students and doctors.

A Pre- Conference Workshop in the context of 43rd Annual International Scientific conference was organized in Patiala Block on 13th December 2023 by Academic Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Sciences and Department of Child and Family Psychiatry in collaboration with Department of Gynaecology and Obstetrics Unit 5 Lady Aitchison Hospital, KEMU, Lahore.

The workshop was titled 'The hand that rocks the cradle: Perinatal Mental Health '
Prof.Dr. Nadia Khurshid, Head of Department of Gynaecology and Obstetrics, Lady Aitchison Hospital, Prof. Dr. Ali Madeeh Hashmi ,HOD Academic Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Sciences,Prof.Dr. Nazish Imran, HOD Child and Family Psychiatry, and Dr Irum Aamer AP, Psychiatry department, KEMU were the facilitators for the workshop.

Workshop started with the recitation of Holy Quran followed by the introduction of facilitators
Prof.Dr. Ali Madeeh Hashmi warmly welcomed all the guests and participants and introduced the objectives of the workshop .

Prof.Dr. Mahmood Ayyaz talked very comprehensively about the importance of perinatal mental health and the consequent impact on child development.

Participants include professors, assistant professors, senior registrars, post graduate residents,house officers and allied health sciences students and psychology internees.

Dr. Irum Aamer discussed the prevalence and common mental health issues .Prof Dr.Nadia Khurshid highlighted the importance of interface between psychiatry and gynaecology related to perinatal issues.Prof.Dr.Nazish Imran discussed about Perinatal Mental Health and Impact on children. Prof.Dr. Ali Hashmi discussed in detail about different screening tools used for perinatal mental health

Prof. Dr. Irfan Malik( President KEMCAANA), Prof.Dr. Saira Afzal, Prof. Dr.Shehzad Shams also joined the event as special guests.

Interactive group activities were designed for this workshop and different case scenarios were discussed.

Panel discussion was joined by Prof.Dr. Shamsa Humayun a renowned gynecologist and senior VP of Medical Women's Association of Pakistan.

Workshop was concluded with the distribution of certificates.

King Edward Medical University has been nominated by the Government of Punjab as a "Model Medical Institution" to showcase for the planned inspection visit by the World Federation of Medical Education later this year.

World Mental Health Day-2023 at King Edward Medical University



The Academic Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, King Edward Medical University / Mayo Hospital Lahore marked World Mental Health Day on October 10, 2023. This year’s theme for World Mental Health Day is ‘Mental Health is a Universal Human Right’. The session was attended by senior members of the faculty of KEMU, administration and all staff members of the Department of Psychiatry and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. The session started with recitation of verses from the Quran following which Prof. Dr. Ali Madeeh Hashmi, Head, Department of Psychiatry shared an overview of the academic, research and training activities of the Department over the last one year. This includes training workshops for local schools, colleges and universities, developing linkages with law enforcement and the legal community and continuing national and international academic activities including poster and paper presentations, workshops and national and international research publications. Prof. Hashmi specially highlighted the Department’s activities to develop Forensic Mental Health Services in collaboration with Punjab Police, Lahore High court and lower courts and Punjab Institute of Mental Health. There are also ongoing collaborations with Queen’s University, Canada and multiple UN funding agencies including UNODC, UNICEF and UNDP as well as both virtual and on the ground mental health initiatives being worked on at the Department. King Edward Medical University’s Pro Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Ijaz Hussain shared his ideas regarding the importance of mental health. CEO Mayo Hospital Prof Dr Haroon Hamid lauded the efforts of the department for providing excellent health care to patients and training to young doctors and students. He also highlighted the importance of mental health as reflected from some verses of the Holy Quran. Former Chairman, Department of Psychiatry, Prof Dr Aftab Asif was invited on stage and he expressed his gratitude upon visiting his alma mater once again and shed light on how mental well-being awareness has evolved over the past few decades and how the acceptance for psychiatric and psychological diseases has increased. Special emphasis was laid on the interface of physical and mental illnesses by senior faculty members from other departments. Significance of women’s mental health and perinatal psychiatry was also highlighted by senior faculty from Obstetrics and Gynaecology department. Prof Dr Nazish Imran delivered a vote of thanks at the end of the ceremony by commenting on the importance of Child and Adolescent mental health and how much more needs to be done for our younger and more vulnerable population especially in schools and college and university campuses.

On this occasion a painting canvas was made available where all the participants were asked to express themselves by “painting their emotions”; an activity thoroughly enjoyed by all guests. All the guests and participants were asked to write their ideas and thoughts on a “comment wall” about mental health in general and world mental health day in particular. This wall will be preserved in our Department and kept as a memory to commemorate this day each year.

Career Counseling Guidance Seminar at King Edward Medical University
Academic Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences King Edward Medical University/Mayo Hospital Lahore in collaboration with World Psychiatric Association (WPA), Pakistan Psychiatric Society (PPS), South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), Pakistani American Psychiatric Association of North America (PAPANA), KemPsych (Psychiatry Interest Group KEMU), Zain Haq Counselling Program (ZHCP), Medical Student's Association Pakistan KEMU LC and Living not Surviving organized a session on "Career Counselling for Medical and Allied Health Sciences Students" on Monday, 9th October, 2023 at King Edward Medical University to mark World Mental Health Day on October 10 . Vice-Chancellor King Edward Medical University, Prof. Dr. Mahmood Ayyaz was Chief Guest at the occasion. Prof. Dr. Bilquis Shabbir, Chairperson Department of Medicine and Dean, Faculty of Nursing, Fatima Jinnah Medical University was Guest of Honor. Prof. Dr. Ali Madeeh Hashmi, Head of Department and Prof. Dr. Nazish Imran, Chairperson, Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry were panelists for the discussion.
Students from all public and private sector medical colleges of Lahore as well as interns and students of clinical psychology and speech pathology attended the session. The session was chaired by Vice Chancellor KEMU Prof Mahmood Ayyaz and began with recitation of Holy Qur'an. Dr Khaula Fatima then introduced the panel of experts. Each panelist shared brief accounts of their personal experiences while navigating through their student life and choosing a career for themselves. Prof Dr Nazish Imran presented some slides on Choosing Psychiatry as a career and introduced the audience to the World Psychiatric Association's Working Group on Medical Students. Pro Vice Chancellor KEMU, Prof Dr Ijaz Hussain also shared words of wisdom with the participants. Prof. Dr. Ali Madeeh Hashmi shared the vision and recent achievements of the Academic Department of Psychiatry KEMU and the career pathways open to medical and allied health students in the USA. This was followed by a Q & A session where each panelist answered questions related to their field of expertise. The participants not only submitted questions beforehand but also utilized the opportunity at hand to ask live questions from the panel of experts. Specific topics addressed included a student's role in research, how to create a balance between personal and professional life as a working woman, and the availability and utilization of various scholarship programs, among others. The participants appreciated the efforts of King Edward Medical University and especially the Academic Department of Psychiatry to provide guidance and assistance to medical students, allied health science students and young medical and allied science graduates in advancing their careers both in Pakistan and abroad. The session ended with a vote of thanks.

“Mental Health and Law Enforcement: A Workshop for Police Personnel”

October is World Mental Health Awareness Month. A “Mental Wellness Training” workshop for Police and Law Enforcement Personnel was conducted at the Academic Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, King Edward Medical University (KEMU), Mayo Hospital Lahore on October 4th, 2023. The workshop was attended by 50 Assistant Sub-inspectors, Sub-inspectors, and Inspectors from Central Police Office Lahore, and Qilla Gujjar Singh police lines. The workshop was organized by Professor Dr. Ali Madeeh Hashmi, Chairman/Head of Department, Dr. Roop Kiran, Senior Registrar and Dr. Khaula Tariq, senior medical officer of the Academic Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences.
The workshop was conducted as part of Mental Wellness Week, 2023 which is being celebrated by the Academic Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, KEMU to commemorate World Mental Health Day, 2023. World Mental Health Day is celebrated on October 10th, 2023 annually to raise awareness about and promote mental health and wellness worldwide.
This interactive workshop aimed to enhance knowledge and understanding among police personnel about mental health and well-being. The activity began with the recitation of the Holy Quran. The first session was conducted by Miss. Nayab Arshad, Clinical Psychologist on “Psychological Assessment: Indicators and Functional Consequences”. Miss. Anum, a Clinical Psychologist at the Department of Psychiatry conducted the session on “Psychological First Aid” to enable police personnel to be able to provide psychological support, reduce stress, and promote recovery in case of personal crisis, public health emergency, natural disaster, or a traumatic event. Dr. Ahmad Talal and Dr. Madah Fatima (postgraduate residents) conducted the hands-on workshop sessions incorporating problem-based learning on anger management and informational care regarding common psychiatric disorders including Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Conversion Disorder. The police staff also shared their own experiences of dealing with stressful situations in the public and their colleagues. Chairman, Department of Psychiatry, Prof. Ali Madeeh Hashmi shared the importance of mental health and the need to develop similar activities all over the country to educate law enforcement and related personnel about the prevalence of mental health problems in the country and to better equip them to deal with this menace. The police personnel present expressed their appreciation for King Edward Medical University, Mayo Hospital, and the Department of Psychiatry for this activity. The workshop ended with a vote of thanks and tea for the assembled guests.
