College of Ophthalmology and Allied Vision Sciences, (COAVS) starting its journey in a single room as Comprehensive Eye Care Cell (CEC Cell) at Mayo Hospital Lahore in 1999, has rapidly evolved into the most renowned and well-recognized teaching center in the country, imparting education in the fields of Ophthalmology & Vision Sciences. It is attached with King Edward Medical University and Mayo H

ospital. Up to December 1998 no step was ever taken to improve the ophthalmic services at district level. In December 1998, Prof Asad Aslam Khan in collaboration with Fred Hollows Foundation conducted a detailed situational analysis of ophthalmic services available at district level in Punjab. The analysis revealed that the number of ophthalmologists was much less than the required number and no trained ophthalmic paramedic or ophthalmic nurse was available at district level. Vitreo Retina or Paediatric Ophthalmology, at tertiary level hospitals. In many districts the ophthalmologists were not trained for microsurgery and intraocular lens implantation. Surgical rate in some of the districts was as low as 100 surgeries per year. In response to the report of the situation analysis, with the intention to improve eye health services in the province, the Punjab health department established a Comprehensive Eye Care Cell (CEC Cell) at Mayo Hospital. The CEC cell accomplished various projects for Prevention of Blindness. In the year 2004, Government of the Punjab, with the addition of teaching faculty for mid-level eye care workers, upgraded it to Punjab Institute of Preventive Ophthalmology (PIPO) to eradicate preventable blindness from the country, particularly from the province of Punjab, and to achieve the goals of Vision 2020 – “The Right to Sight.” This institute was commissioned in a record period of six months. The total cost of the project was Rs.54.50 million, of which Government of the Punjab contributed Rs.27.84 million for the construction, whereas the remaining amount was provided by International NGO’s, WHO and Philanthropists in the form of equipment, furniture and vehicles. Observing the tremendous success and achievements of Punjab Institute of Preventive Ophthalmology (PIPO) and in view to start postgraduate and subspecialty courses in Ophthalmology and Allied Vision Sciences, Government of the Punjab, in 2007, elevated PIPO to College of Ophthalmology & Allied Vision Sciences (COAVS), The basic aims and objectives i.e. achieving the targets of Vision 2020- “The Right to Sight”, to eradicate preventable blindness from the country have not changed; rather the scope of functioning of the college has broadened with the starting of new courses and launching of new projects
These targets of “Vision 2020” are being achieved through:
1. Human Resource Development
2. District Comprehensive Eye Care Programs
3. Disease Control Projects / Programs
4. Continuous Medical Education in Ophthalmology & Allied Vision Sciences
5. Awareness Campaigns
Major partners of the college are INGOs e.g. Fred Hollows Foundation Australia, Sight savers UK, Aus-Aid, Irish Aid, & Christoffelblinden Mission (CBM) Germany / CHEF International. In addition Government of Pakistan, Government of the Punjab, World Health Organization (WHO), corporate partners like Standard Chartered Bank and individual Philanthropists have also contributed considerably.

Happy Independence Day Pakistan 🇩🇿🇩🇿

3-day celebrations of Pakistan Independence Day began today at College of Ophthalmology & Allied Vision Sciences, Mayo Hospital Lahore.
Prof Asad Aslam Khan says that Prof Zahid Kamal Siddiqui always put character building of students before everything. He teaches them about patriotism and Seerat-e-Nabvi and it is an important responsibility of every teacher. Before creation of Pakistan, there were only two Muslims in King Edward Medical University and now look how far we have come due to the efforts and sacrifices of our ancestors, Quiad-e-Azam M. Ali Jinnah and his companions. Prof. Khan also mentioned that practitioners should prioritize medical ethics and shared that Quiad-e-Azam's tuberculous was kept hidden by his doctor because of medical ethics. As if Lord Mount Beaton knew before that M.A Jinnah had TB they would have delayed the partition.
Shahzad Mughal, a media representative, said, "we had amazing leadership when Pakistan came into existence like M. Ali Jinnah, Fatima Jinnah, Allama Iqbal and Molana Zafar Ali Khan. You students are the future and the key to every problem of the nation. Every Pakistani needs not to look up to the leader but lead themselves and just be honest to their work."
Prof. M Khaleel Rana, previous chairperson Ophthalmology department KEMU, said, "Writers like Khrishan Chandar and Naseem Hijazi wrote the literature that tells us how we achieved this freedom for Pakistan. Today this country is going through a log of chaos but I won't be hopeless as hopelessness is a sin. I have this strong believe that this country will be free forever. At the end I'll say some words for our profession. The very first thing is to help some needy and the one drowning."
Prof. M Saleem Chaudry father of martyr Captain Ukasha Talal told that his son achieved martyrdom in 2020 during SSG training, after his martyrdom he was promoted to a Captain. For 14th August, I'd just day that we should stay true to our responsibilities and be honest and this will take to our success."

Masood Ali Khan attended the programme to highlight the role of his grandfather Molana Zafar Ali Khan in the partition. He mentioned some historical moments that took place to break down their morals including 14 years of his life in prison but Molana stayed strong. He Maulana told that lead a very simple life in spite of multiple dynamics and colors of politics, poetry, literature and journalism embodied in his personality.
Prof. zahid Jamal prayed "May Allah accepts Captain Okasha's sacrifice”. Prof said that Pakistan has great geographical diversity, second highest peak, Karakoram Highway (KKH), best irrigation system, have the 5th largest population in the world, 15 languages are spoken in this country and one of the biggest welfare systems like Abdul Sattar Edhi is established here. We're good in sports like squash, hockey, cricket and the recent gold medal won by Arshad Nadeem was acknowledged by the whole world. He encouraged students with all positives that our country and country fellows possess.
We all working on respectable positions and it is all because of Pakistan. Now it’s our turn to return our services to our country. We all are thankful to Prof. Asad Aslam Khan to build this institution. Students from all over Pakistan study here and this institution is like mini-Pakistan. We all should try to serve our country even through a little act like saving electricity and saving water in doing Wuzu. We are free in our geographical form but we should keep our ideology and thoughts free too." In the end, he thanked faculty members Tehsina Akram, Abida Asghar & Noreen Fatima for the best arrangements of the programme.

Saadia Cheema, Sidra Anwar and Hakeem Anjum presented great poetry on importance of independence.
