Denmark's insulin patch eliminated daily injections, but pharmaceutical companies delay US launch

Danish endocrinologists developed a painless skin patch that automatically delivers insulin through microneedles, eliminating the need for daily injections. Diabetic patients maintain perfect blood sugar control without needles or pumps.

The smart patch measures blood glucose continuously through skin sensors and releases precisely calibrated insulin doses via dissolving microneedles smaller than human hair. Users replace patches weekly like bandages—no painful injections, no pump equipment, no constant monitoring. Clinical trials showed better glucose control than traditional insulin therapy with 99% patient satisfaction.

Pharmaceutical companies delayed US market entry by filing competing patents, challenging FDA applications, and lobbying for restrictive regulations. The patch threatens $35 billion annual US insulin sales and $10 billion glucose monitoring device market. Companies profit from daily insulin sales and disposable supplies, making a convenient weekly patch financially threatening to their business model.

Over 8 million Americans inject insulin daily—many missing doses due to needle fear or inconvenience, causing dangerous blood sugar fluctuations. Danish diabetics enjoy pain-free control while Americans wait for corporate legal battles to resolve. The better technology exists but profit protection delays patient access by years.

Should pharmaceutical profits determine when Americans access painless insulin delivery?

🌟 Alhamdulillah! Excited to Share a Milestone 🌟

My original research article titled
“Mortality Rates and Age-Based Analysis of Ischemic Stroke in Peshawar: A Comparative Study between Urban and Rural Populations”
has now been officially published online in the Global Academic Journal of Medical Sciences.

🔬 This study highlights critical disparities in stroke outcomes between urban and rural populations of Peshawar, emphasizing the urgent need to strengthen rural healthcare access and stroke management services.

Alhamdulillah! I am humbled and delighted to share that my letter to the editor, “In Reply: Impact of Respiratory Syncytial Virus Prevention in Infancy on Prevalence of Asthma Among Native American Children,” has been published in the internationally renowned Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal (PIDJ). This critique highlights important considerations regarding the long-term impact of RSV prevention on childhood asthma prevalence, particularly in vulnerable populations. It emphasizes the need for larger studies, standardized outcome measures, and extended follow-up to better understand RSV’s role in asthma development.

The Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal (PIDJ), published by Wolters Kluwer Health, Inc., is a globally recognized and high-impact journal in the field of pediatric infectious diseases. It has the ISSN 0891-3668 and is indexed in PubMed, MEDLINE, Scopus, and other major scientific databases, making it one of the leading and most respected platforms for pediatric research.

What does Evidence level in medical literature means like level 1, 2 etc ?

In medical literature, levels of evidence basically rank the strength and reliability of research. This hierarchy helps doctors and researchers decide how much trust to put in a study when applying it to patient care.

General Hierarchy of Evidence (simplified)
1. Level I (Strongest evidence):
• Systematic reviews & meta-analyses of randomized controlled trials (RCTs)
• High-quality RCTs with consistent results
2. Level II:
• Lesser-quality RCTs, prospective cohort studies
3. Level III:
• Case-control studies, retrospective cohorts
4. Level IV:
• Case series, case reports (no control group)
5. Level V (Weakest):
• Expert opinion, narrative reviews, lab/bench studies

In short: Level 1 = strongest proof, Level 5 = weakest.

Oxford CEBM Levels of Evidence (detailed clinical format)

Level 1 (Strongest)
• 1a: Systematic review of RCTs
• 1b: Individual RCT with narrow CI
• 1c: “All or none” evidence

Level 2
• 2a: Systematic review of cohort studies
• 2b: Individual cohort study / low-quality RCT
• 2c: Outcomes research, ecological studies

Level 3
• 3a: Systematic review of case-control studies
• 3b: Individual case-control study

Level 4
• Case series, poor-quality cohort/case-control

Level 5 (Weakest)
• Expert opinion, physiology/bench research

Clinical Use
• Level 1 → Grade A (strong recommendation)
• Level 2–3 → Grade B/C (moderate)
• Level 4–5 → Grade D (weak)

Example:
• New drug with meta-analysis of RCTs → Level 1a, Grade A.
• 10-patient case series → Level 4 evidence, weak.

Root idea.
The higher the level (1a, 1b) → the more reliable the evidence. The lower the level (4, 5) → the more cautious we must be in applying it.
