What is a Medicare MAC?
MAC stands for Medicare Administrative Contractor.
A Medicare MAC is a private insurance company that works for CMS (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services).
MACs are responsible for:
•Processing Medicare claims
•Making payments
•Handling denials and appeals
•Providing Medicare policy guidance
How many Medicare MACs are there?
There are two main types of Medicare MACs:
1️⃣ A/B MACs (Part A and Part B)
Total A/B MACs: 12
They manage:
• Part A (Hospital, SNF, Home Health, Hospice)
• Part B (Physicians, outpatient services)
Each A/B MAC covers multiple U.S. states, grouped into jurisdictions
Examples of A/B MACs:
• Novitas Solutions
• Noridian Healthcare Solutions
• Palmetto GBA
• CGS Administrators
• WPS Government Health Administrators
• National Government Services (NGS)
2️⃣ DME MACs (Durable Medical Equipment)
Total DME MACs: 4
They handle claims for:
• Wheelchairs
• Oxygen equipment
• Braces and prosthetics
DME MACs cover the entire
U.S., divided into regions
DME MACs:
• CGS Administrators
• Noridian Healthcare Solutions
• Palmetto GBA
• National Government Services (NGS)
