Lactobacillus species produce hydrogen peroxide which inhibits the growth and virulence of the fungal pathogen Candida albicans.

Infectious Mononucleosis (Kissing Disease)

You kissed a girl and you liked it. Unfortunately that girl had a virus-EBV. And now you're sick and tired and have it too.

In the smear you can see atypical(not normal) lymphocytes- Pleomorphic (different shapes and sizes) with lots of blue(basophilc) cytoplasm (fluid around the nucleus).

Agglutinated masses of RBCs of variable size are noted in this view.

This Peripheral smear from a patient with a diagnosis of Cold Agglutinin Disease. Laboratory data included a cold agglutinin titer of 1:256 and the presence of an IgM kappa restricted monoclonal protein in his serum. The patient was subsequently diagnoses with a small lymphocytic lymphoma.

Flame cells are plasma cells with a distinctive pinkish hue in the outer rim of the cytoplasm. This appearance is thought to be the result of precipitated immunoglobulin. These cells can be found in plasma cell dyscrasias as well as cases of chronic infection or inflammation.

Platelet Abnormalities:

(A) Two giant platelets one with absent granules.

(B) Large platelets with no apparent granules.

(C) Large platelet with abnormal central structure (megakaryocytic nuclear remnant).

The agranular platelets in (A) and (B) mimic Gray platelet syndrome resulting in this case from acquired alpha granule deficiency.
