The Schirmer's test is a diagnostic tool used to assess tear production in the eyes, particularly to identify dry eye syndrome or Sjögren's syndrome.
It measures the amount of tears produced by placing a filter paper strip within the lower eyelid.
A normal result indicates adequate tear production, while a result below a certain threshold (e.g., less than 5 mm of wetting) suggests insufficient tear production.
