Understanding and Addressing ADHD: A Call to Action
Last week, I was diagnosed with malaria after experiencing severe symptoms like headaches, vomiting, fever, and dizziness. When I shared my diagnosis openly, everyone wished me a speedy recovery. It's easy to talk about physical illnesses like malaria, but discussing mental health issues is often taboo in our society. For example, if a child shows signs of inattention, fidgeting, or difficulty focusing, we often resort to scolding them rather than seeking help from a mental health specialist. Unfortunately, by the time we consider professional help, much damage has already been done.
Have we ever paused to ask a child why they struggle to listen, why they seem to answer questions incorrectly, or why they can't remember things? Do we consider that they might have an issue with recalling information or staying focused? Instead of understanding, we often react with frustration, not realizing the child may be dealing with something beyond their control. If a child acts out or struggles to sit still, we might dismiss it as misbehavior, ignoring the possibility of an underlying disorder.
Children going through such challenges face harsh consequences, especially when scolded by teachers for being inattentive. The blame is placed on the child when, in reality, a disorder like Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) might be at play. ADHD is not a trivial issue—it can severely impact a child's life, potentially leading to depression and, in some cases, even su***de. These children often internalize the belief that their struggles are their fault, rather than a result of their disorder.
We must become more aware of the signs of ADHD in children and adults alike. By observing behaviors at home, in schools, and in the workplace, we can identify those who may need help and guide them to a mental health specialist before it's too late. Understanding and addressing ADHD is crucial to prevent long-term consequences and to support those affected by this challenging disorder.
