First Meeting of Allied Health Council ...📈

16/04/2023

Salam everyone,

I just wanted to emphasize the importance of not relying solely on MCQs (Multiple Choice Questions) found in books. Our teachers have worked hard to teach us the course material, and it's up to them to create the questions for our exams.

It's mentioned in our curriculum to study from multiple sources, typically 5 or 6 books, to get a well-rounded understanding of the course material. We are not in school or intermediate anymore where teachers give us notes to memorize and regurgitate on paper. We are now in a stage of our education where we need to think critically, analyze concepts, and apply our knowledge.

By solely relying on MCQs from books, we are not only jeopardizing our own learning but also risking our academic integrity. It's important to trust the expertise of our teachers and the curriculum designed for our course.

So let's put in the effort to thoroughly study the material, understand the concepts, and practice solving different types of questions. Let's strive for a deep understanding of the subject matter rather than just trying to find shortcuts through MCQs from past paper or from the only book suggested by the teacher.

Remember, our exams are not just about getting a high score, but also about gaining knowledge and developing critical thinking skills that will serve us well in our future endeavors. Let's make the most out of this opportunity and give it our best shot!

We students and gradutes of Allied health science want to bring attention to the recent developments regarding KMU's affiliation with institutes. It's alarming to see that KMU is affiliating with more and more institutes (Allied health science and Nursing) without even considering their hospital, building, or staff. What's more concerning is how people are establishing institutes in markets, Plazas and or in a small buildings and KMU is affiliating them without proper consideration.

Currently, KMU has affiliated with more than 170 institutes, but the quality of education and facilities in these institutes is questionable. This affiliation trend needs to be stopped before it compromises the quality of health education and the future of our youth and health care system.

We need to ensure that institutes affiliated with KMU are held to high standards of education and equipped with the necessary resources to provide quality education to students. We must prioritize the future of our youth and their education. Let's raise our voices and demand that KMU puts a stop to this reckless affiliation trend.

"Today marks one-year and two months (10/2/2022) of the Senate of Pakistan passing the Allied Health Council Bill, which aimed to regulate the practice of allied health professionals in the country. However, it's disheartening to see that even after a year, the bill has not been implemented yet. This is a clear indication that we need to continue our struggle to make our voices heard and to push for the implementation of this important legislation. The regulation of allied health professionals is essential for ensuring quality healthcare for all, and we cannot afford to let this bill be forgotten. Let's continue to raise our voices and demand action from the government!"

The Association of Schools of Allied Health Professions defines allied health as the segment of the health care field “that delivers services involving the identification, evaluation and prevention of diseases and disorders; dietary and nutrition services; and rehabilitation and health systems management.”

The allied health professions fall into two broad categories: technicians (assistants) and therapists/technologists. Technicians are trained to perform procedures, and their education lasts less than two years. They are required to work under the supervision of technologists or therapists. Cardiovascular technicians, ophthalmic medical technicians and medical assistants are examples of careers in this category.

The educational process for therapists or technologists is more intensive and includes acquiring procedural skills. In addition, students learn to evaluate patients, diagnose conditions, develop treatment plans and understand the rationale behind various treatments in order to judge their appropriateness and potential side effects. Educational curricula teach students to evaluate patients’ responses to therapy and make appropriate decisions about continued treatment or modification of treatment plans. Anesthesiologist assistant, neurodiagnostic technologist and pathologists’ assistant are three examples of allied health careers in this category.

Today, I came across an eye-opening difference in the job description between two provinces. In one province (Punjab), employees in the same position are given a BPS.17 scale, while in the other(KPK), they are struggling for their very identity. Some of our gradutes are on BPS.12 post which is basically a technician post.

This highlights the importance of having a service structure that is fair and just for all employees, regardless of their location or background. It's disheartening to see individuals in the same profession facing such vast differences in their job descriptions and salaries.

As a society, we must strive to ensure that all employees are treated equally and have access to the same opportunities, regardless of where they come from. Let's work together to create a fair and just system for all.
