Speech therapy, also known as speech-language pathology, is a healthcare profession that focuses on evaluating and treating communication disorders and speech impediments. Speech therapists, or speech-language pathologists (SLPs), work with individuals to diagnose and address a wide range of communication challenges, including:
- Articulation disorders (e.g., difficulty pronouncing sounds)
- Language disorders (e.g., difficulty understanding or using language)
- Voice disorders (e.g., changes in pitch, volume, or quality)
- Fluency disorders (e.g., stuttering)
- Cognitive-communication disorders (e.g., difficulty with memory, attention, or problem-solving)
SLPs use various techniques and strategies to improve communication skills, including:
- Speech exercises and drills
- Language interventions (e.g., reading, writing, conversational skills)
- Cognitive training (e.g., memory, attention, problem-solving)
- Alternative communication methods (e.g., augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices)
Speech therapy can benefit individuals of all ages, from children with developmental delays to adults with acquired communication disorders due to injury or illness.

and are related but distinct conditions, and their treatments, while overlapping, can differ based on severity and specific needs.
Dysarthria is a motor speech disorder caused by neurological damage that affects the muscles used for speaking. It results in slow, weak, uncoordinated, or imprecise speech.
Treatment:
1.Speech Therapy: Focuses on improving speech production through exercises that enhance muscle strength, coordination, and control. Techniques include:
- Articulation exercises to improve clarity of speech sounds.
- Breathing exercises to control airflow and support speech.
- Prosody training to improve rhythm, stress, and intonation.
- Compensatory strategies to enhance intelligibility, like slowing down speech or over-articulating sounds.
2. Assistive Devices: In severe cases, augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices may be used to support or replace speech.
3. Medical Interventions: In some cases, medical treatments or surgeries may address underlying neurological conditions contributing to dysarthria.
Anarthria is the most severe form of dysarthria, characterized by a complete inability to produce articulate speech due to extreme muscle weakness or paralysis affecting the speech muscles.
Treatment:
1. AAC Devices: Given the inability to produce speech, AAC devices become a primary mode of communication. These can range from simple picture boards to sophisticated speech-generating devices.
- Low-Tech Options: Picture boards, communication books, or letter boards.
- High-Tech Options: Electronic devices that generate speech from text input or symbols, including tablets and specialized AAC devices.
2. Non-Verbal Communication Training: Teaching alternative methods of communication, such as sign language, gestures, or written communication.
3. Speech Therapy: If any residual speech capability exists, speech therapy might focus on maximizing these limited abilities and maintaining muscle strength.
4. Medical and Supportive Care: Addressing any underlying medical conditions and providing ongoing support for daily communication needs.
and Aspects
- **Overlap**: Both conditions benefit from speech therapy and the use of AAC devices. Techniques to improve breath support, muscle strength, and coordination are common.
- **Distinct**: Anarthria requires a greater reliance on AAC due to the complete inability to articulate speech, while dysarthria treatment may focus more on improving and maximizing existing speech capabilities.
In both conditions, a personalized treatment plan developed by a speech-language pathologist, often in collaboration with other healthcare professionals, is essential to address the specific needs and goals of the individual.

I'm soooo excited I have created an AMAAAZING freebie for parents, carers, preschool and educators, and speech therapists.
🥰Someone said I should charge for it but I wanted to give it free because I saw that so many parents are struggling with getting their child talking:
😭" My child is 3 and has no words and doesn't understand anything"
😭" My son is getting frustrated because people don't understand him and he can't say want he needs. It's showing in his behaviour and we are getting tantrums and we can't go out as much because of the behaviour"
😭" I feel broken-hearted that my daughter can't get their words out!"
It breaks my heart to read these messages because communication is SOOOOO IMPORTANT...we use it EVERY. SINGLE.DAY....
Of course, we want our kids to communicate with :
👉 parents
👉 their teachers
👉 grandparents
👉 friends
So you can grab this freebie here: https://www.mavenbusinesshaven.com/freebie

I started my teletherapy business in 2015 when I was asked to see a young man in Italy. I lived in the UK and it would have been costly and impossible to see him every week, if I had not discovered Skype.
He was in his final year at a mainstream Italian school and he had severe dyspraxia making his speech unintelligible. On top of that he had a severe stammer and moderate to severe learning disabilities. He could not write or read a sentence. In addition to that, he had no means of communication ~ no signing, no symbol board and no voice output device....no AAC ( Alternative and Augmentative Communication).
I taught him to sign and use an app on his iPad to communicate his needs and to even pass his oral exams on 5 different PowerPoint presentations . Some people would say that was impossible especially if you have a speech therapist like me who does not speak Italian.
However, I am not phased by technology and I achieved his communication goals successfully....and all remotely through Teletherapy.
If you are a SLT working in UK, Europe or anywhere that isn’t the USA and you want to know how to do teletherapy, please book a free 45 minute consultation call by going to https://teletherapyinaction.bevjessup.com/apply
