F. Horner syndrome

1. The pterion is the area on the skull where the parietal, frontal, temporal, and sphenoid bones join together. It is located on the side of the skull, just behind the temple.

2. Pterion has clinical significance – the skull is very thin at this location. Because of the structural weakness, any injury can lead to damage to structures lying below. The one structure that runs in this area is the middle meningeal artery.

3. If there is an injury to the middle meningeal artery, the patient will present with an epidural hematoma. The injury may be a blow to the back or top of the scalp. A CT scan is recommended when patients have injury to the pterion.
