''Addiction is defined as compulsive drug use despite negative consequences.
The goals of the addicted person become narrowed to obtaining, using, and recovering from drugs, despite failure in life roles, medical illness, risk of incarceration, and other problems.

An important characteristic of addiction is its stubborn persistence.

Although some individuals can stop compulsive use of to***co, alcohol, or illegal drugs on their own, for a large number of individuals rendered vulnerable by both genetic and nongenetic factors, addiction proves to be a recalcitrant, chronic, and relapsing condition.

The central problem in the treatment of addiction is that even after prolonged drug-free periods, well after the last withdrawal symptom has receded, the risk of relapse, often precipitated by drug-associated cues, remains very high.

Were this not the case, treatment could simply consist of locking addicted people away in a protective environment until withdrawal symptoms were comfortably behind them, issuing a stern warning about future behavior, and having done with it'' .https://ajp.psychiatryonline.org/doi/full/10.1176/appi.ajp.162.8.1414 ©Addiction Actually

11 Things I Learned In Love

1. Love is a choice. It's not just a feeling that comes and goes, but something that requires effort and commitment to nurture and maintain.

2. Communication is key. It's important to be open and honest with your partner, and to make an effort to understand their perspective.

3. Trust is essential. Trust is the foundation of any healthy relationship, and it's important to work on building and maintaining trust with your partner.

4. Respect is crucial. It's important to respect your partner's boundaries, feelings, and opinions, even if you don't always agree with them.

5. Compromise is necessary. In any relationship, there will be times when you have to compromise in order to find a solution that works for both of you.

6. Forgiveness is important. It's normal to make mistakes or have disagreements in a relationship, but it's important to be able to forgive and move on from them.

7. Love is not always easy. Love requires effort and work, and there will be ups and downs in any relationship. It's important to be prepared for challenges and to work through them together.

8. Love is not always perfect. No relationship is perfect, and it's important to accept and embrace the imperfections and quirks of your partner.

9. Love requires effort. It's important to make an effort to show your love and appreciation for your partner, through small gestures and acts of kindness.

10. Love is not selfish. It's important to consider your partner's needs and wants, and to be selfless in your love for them.

11. Love is worth it. Despite the challenges and effort that may be required, love is ultimately a rewarding and fulfilling experience that can bring joy and happiness to your life.

Let's be clear: Respectful parenting is NOT permissive parenting.

❌Permissive parenting = no rules/structure, indulgent = well, sheer chaos🌪️

❌Authoritarian parenting: enforces good behavior with threats, shaming, punishment, less parental warmth = an increase in worsening behavior over time + depression later in life.

We are OUT with the old school way of parenting: children being seen not heard, blind obedience, listening to authority OR ELSE. This often leads to 1 of 2 outcomes: a child so compliant they grow into a compliant/people pleasing adult who blindly follows orders, someone who pushes their own needs down OR a child who learns to hide mistakes from their parents, someone whose instinct is to hide their feelings, problems + true selves from loved ones.

The Latin root of the word discipline means "to teach." How do children/people learn best? Well, think back to the worst teacher/boss you've had. On your case ALL day, pointing out EVERYTHING you did wrong. You’re there to follow the commands + shut your mouth.

Were you motivated? Did you learn/ grow? Nope, you showed up, did bare minimum + couldn't wait to leave.

Now, think of the best teacher/boss you've had. Level headed, calm, CONFIDENT in their leadership. They took charge, but you felt safe knowing they'd lead you in the right direction. They made you feel heard + invested time into you.

So, think of yourself as the calm, confident leader of your home.🏡Someone who:

✅ Leads by example
Set the tone you're strong + supportive. A boss who leads with confidence, even in times of stress, makes their employees, aka family, feel safe.

✅Makes the big decisions
You confidently decide + enforce when it’s time for a nap, what’s for dinner, and when it’s time to leave the park.

✅Collaborates
You choose the big stuff BUT you empower your toddler with age-appropriate power, eg choosing which pair of shoes they want.

✅Speaks with calm confidence
Resist the urge to meet chaos with chaos. Let your calm be contagious.

THE BOY IN RAGS

A Touching Story With Morals.

A wealthy father and his son went shopping in an expensive shopping mall. On their way back to their car, a poor boy approached them. He cried.

"Please help me sir! I don't have any more clothes to wear"

The rich father threw a glance at the poor boy and felt compassion for him. His clothes were ripped and shredded.

"How old are you, little boy?" he asked him.

"I'm ten, sir" he responded.

Then the rich father said.
"Well, my son is ten too, and I presume that his new clothes would fit you"

The father turned to his posh-looking son.

"Jeff, don't you think it would be generous of you to spare some of your new clothes we have bought? We could still come shopping tomorrow"

The boy whispered.
"It's fine, dad"

The rich father then opened their shopping bag and took out few clothes which he handed to the poor boy. His face lit up in excitement.

The father then inquired.
"May I know where you live?"

The poor boy replied.
"I live under the bridge, right down the street"

He expressed deep gratitude, and watched the father and his son as they walked into their car and drove away.

Three months later, the rich father drove down the street, looking for the poor boy under the bridge. When he found him, he took him to the car and brought out boxes of clothes, shoes, bags and toys. He said.

"They're my son's belongings but I'm giving them all to you now"

The poor boy was surprised and couldn't stop crying. He said.

"But how about your son? Wouldn't he need these any longer?"

The rich father uttered.
"No, because he is in heaven now. My sweet little boy died some weeks ago of terminal cancer. He had lived with cancer for three years, and we had known all along that he was going to die, so it was emotionally very difficult to watch him enter the final days of life. Do you know that on his deathbed, Jeff said to me 'daddy when I'm finally gone, could you give all my belongings to the poor boy we met outside the mall, the boy who has nothing, wears rags and sleeps under the bridge"

The father paused for a moment, with tears in his eyes, he concluded.

"You may be poor, but you have no idea how blessed you are to have life, something that money cannot buy. I could have bought a hundred lives for my son if it was possible, but no. You may have envied my son's lifestyle, but I'm sure you didn't know about all his struggles and health challenges. That's how life is. We often compare our lives to others, forgetting that life doesn't come with perfection, reason why everyone goes through difficult times. So, instead of envying others, we should focus on watering our own grass and building our own path, for as long as there is life, hope follows. And always remember the story of the poor boy who didn't have clothes to wear, but was gifted clothes by a rich boy who didn't have life ahead of him.
