Abbott Introduces Mospel Cream for Protection Against Malaria and Dengue Fever
The pioneering mosquito repellant “Mospel” in Pakistan, is now available in an improved formulation, “Mospel cream.” Mospel cream combines ease of use and protection against malaria and dengue fever in one simple formulation making it both an effective and convenient product.
Malaria, which is transmitted by the bite of a mosquito infected with the parasite plasmodium, affects more than 200 million people worldwide. According to the United Nations World Health Organization (WHO), there is moderate prevalence of malaria in Pakistan. The disease is estimated to cause at least 50,000 deaths out of an estimated 500,000 reported malaria cases every year. Only one in four malaria sufferers in Pakistan get treatment for the disease.

Reducing skin exposure to mosquito bites in high-risk countries is an important way to help prevent the disease. That includes use of nets to prevent entry of mosquitos and insecticides sprayed on the body or in the home.
Dr. Javed Akram, Principal and CEO Allama Iqbal Medical College, Jinnah Hospital Complex in Lahore stated “Mospel is the only insect repellant in Pakistan that is based on the World Health Organization (WHO) approved DEET (N, N-Diethyl-Meta-Toulomide) formulation available for effective insect control.”
“Over two decades ago when Mospel was first launched, we were focused on developing a local innovative solution to provide protection against malaria, a disease that was still affecting hundreds of thousands in Pakistan,” said Seema Khan, Director Regulatory Affairs and Business Development, Abbott Pakistan and who was then part of the product development team. “Continuous innovation to meet the changing preferences of our customers is at the core of our operations as we have now introduced a fragrant cream formulation that is gentle on the skin, is easy to apply and also provides protection against malaria and dengue.”
Key findings of a customer preference survey conducted by Abbott in 2012 to gauge local needs had highlighted the preference for an oil-free, easy to apply variant particularly for young children. A total of 600 respondents from the urban cities of Pakistan had participated in the survey.
Mospel is the market leading, mosquito repellant that provides up to eight hours of protection against malaria. Now available in a cream formulation, Mospel Cream is gentle on skin, easy to apply, fragrant and continues to provide protection against malaria and dengue fever.
