While this article focuses on the culture in Nepal, I find much of it to be very relevant to Pakistani culture as well. There are many young people who desperately want to seek help, but their families deny their problems and prevent them from doing so. It is time to break this taboo.

Kathmandu, May 27 -- In Nepal, mental health is a topic between silence and slow acceptance. At the same time, we have seen growth in public awareness in recent years. Many individuals, especially those in middle age, struggle to reconcile cultural expectations with emotional well-being.

Our Story

I am a nutritional psychologist practicing part-time in Lahore, Pakistan. Currently, I am seeing clients either at Contours in Gulberg or at Chugtai Medical Center (Lailak Chowk) in DHA, as well as remotely through WhatsApp or Skype. My focus is on helping individuals find balance between their dietary habits, physical health, mental health, family, work, and other aspects of our lives.

Often times we fail to realize that what we eat, when we eat, where we eat, who we eat with, and why we eat are primarily influenced by learned behaviors. These behaviors are learned and reinforced from our childhood, and over time become habitual. Changing our habits whether related to food or 0ther aspects of life is possible but it takes time, and it has to be done by implementing small changes one or two at a time. These small changes also need to be positively reinforced, or the likely hood that they will become permanent changes is less likely. So whether an individual is wanting to change their eating due to diabetes, heart disease, obesity, depression, joint/muscle pain, etc., they need to set goals, talk about issues that they are facing, and learn how to change their habits. While there are similarities with all of us, there are also differences. Therefore, what works for one individual may or may not work for another. I help my clients discover what works and doesn’t work for them.

I am also a part-time swim instructor/life skills teacher at Lahore School of Learning. I enjoy my time with the students as it gives me another venue to help instill good nutrition and physical activity habits to the younger generation. It is so much easier to learn good habits from an early age than to change them when we get older.
