Asthenopia (Eye Strain)
Definition:
Asthenopia, commonly known as eye strain, is a condition in which the eyes feel tired, uncomfortable, or painful after prolonged visual activity such as reading, computer use, or other near work.
👁️ Causes:
1. Prolonged near work (reading, mobile or computer use).
2. Uncorrected refractive errors (myopia, hypermetropia, astigmatism).
3. Poor lighting or glare.
4. Improper working distance or posture.
5. Ocular muscle imbalance (heterophoria, convergence insufficiency).
6. Dry eye or reduced blinking during screen use.
⚠️ Symptoms:
Eye fatigue or heaviness
Frontal or periocular headache
Blurred or double vision
Watering, burning, or dryness of eyes
Difficulty in focusing
Pain around the eyes or temples
🔍 Types:
1. Accommodative asthenopia:
Due to excessive use or weakness of the ciliary (focusing) muscles.
2. Muscular asthenopia:
Due to weakness or imbalance of extraocular muscles (e.g., convergence insufficiency).
3. Nervous asthenopia:
Related to general fatigue, stress, or nervous tension.
💡 Management:
Correct refractive errors with proper spectacles.
Take regular breaks (20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds).
Maintain good lighting and screen ergonomics.
Lubricating eye drops for dryness.
Orthoptic exercises for muscle imbalance.
Manage stress and general health.
