Thyroid gland
Symptoms , Treatment, prevention
The thyroid gland is a small, butterfly-shaped gland located in the front of the neck. It produces hormones, specifically thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), that regulate metabolism and energy production in the body. The production of these hormones is controlled by the pituitary gland through the production of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH).
Thyroid disorders can occur when the gland produces too much or too little hormone. Hypothyroidism is when the thyroid gland is underactive and produces too little hormone, leading to symptoms such as fatigue, weight gain, and constipation. Hyperthyroidism is when the thyroid gland is overactive and produces too much hormone, leading to symptoms such as weight loss, increased heart rate, and anxiety.
Autoimmune disorders, such as Hashimoto's thyroiditis and Graves’ disease, can also affect the thyroid gland. In Hashimoto's thyroiditis, the immune system attacks the thyroid gland causing inflammation and damage, leading to an underactive thyroid. In Graves’ disease, the immune system produces antibodies that stimulate the thyroid gland, causing an overactive thyroid.
Diagnosis of thyroid disorders is done through blood tests to measure thyroid hormone levels and TSH levels. Treatment typically includes medication to regulate thyroid hormone levels. In some cases, surgery may be necessary to remove part or all of the thyroid gland.
