Scientists in the Netherlands have discovered a new organ, a set of salivary glands set deep in the upper part of the throat, Livescience reported. The "accidental" discovery was made when researchers at the Netherlands Cancer Institute were using a combination of CT scans and positron emission tomography (PET) scans called PSMA PET-CT to study prostate cancer.

Turkish physical therapy and rehabilitation specialist has developed a urine kit to detect the novel coronavirus in 15 seconds.

Dr Mehmet Serhan Kurtulmus said he developed the kit in which a special reactant is used to detect parts specific to the virus that causes Covid-19.

Kurtulmus said he started work on the kit in March, when the first coronavirus case was confirmed in Turkey, and finished in November.

Jamil's sign

Prof Shahid Jamil and Dr Syed Shahmeer Raza’s of Khyber Medical College, , study to introduce and validate a novel clinical sign in Meningitis has been accepted for abstract presentation at the College of (RCP) Conference to be held on the upcoming 8th December.

The introduction of a new clinical sign which is Neck Stiffness in Lateral Position (NSLP) named as Jamil’s Sign after the Principal : Professor Dr Shahid Jamil.

The observation leading to this was the effect of change in posture that a person resists when the Neck Stiffness (NS) is checked in Supine position.

This resistance was observed to be far more than when the same change in posture was brought about, in the Lateral Position. He has, along his , come across more than 3000 cases of Meningitis.

This prompted the principal author to start a study to validate his .

The study found Jamil’s Sign to be more than 90 per cent sensitive and specific.

This, however, greatly depends on the person performing the examination and is a skill learnt and developed over time.

Similarly, there is inter-observer variation in interpretation of neck stiffness. Aim of this study was to check the validation of a new clinical sign in i.e. Jamil’s sign.

The pathophysiology behind Jamil’s Sign could be similar to examining the tone in different parts of the body. The concept is to look for an increased tone in the neck under the influence of meningeal irritation.

Maneuver will lead to a motor response as a result of nociceptor exploitation. This motor response is gauged in the form of neck stiffness.

Jamil’s sign removes the effect of gravity and passive resistance to the neck movement observed in the supine position.

The association of American College of Surgeons has elected the honorable surgeon Dr. Mahmood Ayyaz to the Board of Governors as the Governor at Large representing the Fellows in the Pakistan Chapter. His appointment was made official by the Fellows at the Annual Business Meeting of Members on October 7th for an initial three years.

Dr. Mahmood Ayyaz will serve as a direct communications link between the Fellows of the College and the members of the Board of Governors. He will participate in Board of Governors meetings, convocation, and the Annual Meeting of Members at the next Clinical Congress.

He will also serve a means of communication between the Board of Governors and the Fellows in the Pakistan Chapter and attend chapter meetings.
