Plantar Fasciitis
Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain. It happens when the plantar fascia, a thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot, connecting the heel bone to the toes – becomes irritated or inflamed.
Causes
• Excessive running, jumping, or standing for long hours
• Obesity (extra weight putting stress on the foot)
• Flat feet or very high arches
• Wearing shoes without proper arch support or cushioning
• Sudden increase in physical activity
Symptoms
• Sharp heel pain, especially in the morning with first steps
• Pain after long periods of rest (e.g., sitting, sleeping)
• Pain worsens with prolonged standing or walking
• Tenderness and stiffness in the heel or arch area
Management / Treatment
1. Rest – avoid long walks or standing for too long
2. Ice packs – 15–20 minutes, several times daily
3. Supportive footwear – cushioned shoes with arch support
4. Weight management – reduces stress on the feet
5. Stretching exercises – calf and plantar fascia stretches
6. Medications – NSAIDs (like ibuprofen) for pain relief.
7. Physiotherapy – ultrasound therapy, taping, night splints
8. Advanced options – steroid injections or surgery (only in severe, persistent cases)
