Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurological disorder that affects movement and coordination. It occurs when nerve cells in the brain, particularly in an area called the substantia nigra, become damaged or die, leading to a drop in dopamine levels—a chemical essential for smooth, controlled body movements. The main symptoms include tremors, muscle stiffness, slowness of movement, and balance problems. Over time, it can also affect speech, writing, mood, sleep, and memory. While the exact cause is not fully understood, it is believed to involve a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Although there is no cure, treatments such as medication, physical therapy, and in some cases surgery can help manage symptoms and improve quality of life.
