F📢 Important Update from the American Optometric Association (AOA)
🧠👁️ Evolving Role of the Doctor of Optometry
Dear colleagues,
The AOA Board of Trustees has officially amended the definition of the Doctor of Optometry (O.D.) to better reflect our evolving and essential role in primary eye health care across the United States. As frontline providers, optometrists are now more broadly recognized for the vital contributions we make not only in vision care but also in overall systemic health.
🔹 Key Highlights from the Updated Definition:
O.D.s are recognized as physicians under Medicare.
We diagnose, manage, and treat eye diseases and systemic manifestations.
We play a vital role in public health, including vaccinations.
We are authorized to prescribe medications, perform certain surgical procedures, and offer rehabilitative therapies.
Patient education and lifestyle-based visual solutions remain central to our practice.
Professional education includes 4 years of optometry school post-undergrad, with many O.D.s pursuing residencies for specialized care.
This update reinforces our importance in integrated healthcare and supports our expanding scope of practice. Let’s continue to advocate for our profession and provide exceptional care to our patients.
