Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a chronic condition where stomach acid or bile flows back into the esophagus, causing irritation. Common symptoms include heartburn, regurgitation, chest pain, difficulty swallowing, and a sour taste in the mouth. It occurs when the lower esophageal sphincter weakens or relaxes abnormally, allowing acid reflux.
