Cerebral palsy (CP), with its primary features of movement limitation and impairment of postural control.
CP is a complex condition that results from damage to the immature brain. It is also the most prevalent type of physical disability in children.
Causes of cerebral palsy can be classified as prenatal, perinatal or postnatal according to the timing of damage to the central nervous system. The cause of cerebral palsy is unclear in many children, though low birth weight and prematurity are known risk factors.
All children with cerebral palsy are at risk for contractures or deformities. However, because of their lack of (or reduced) active movements, nonβambulant children with cerebral palsy are more prone to develop muscle shortening and deformities such as scoliosis, dislocation, and sub dislocation.
Children with cerebral palsy may also have impaired hand and upper limb function.
The therapist plans for the necessary preparatory work (e.g. muscle elongation) to enable the client to perform the task and will facilitate and guide the movement as needed to decrease or prevent posture and movement behaviours that would interfere with the functional abilities of the infant or child.
Physiotherapy is important for supporting people with CP and managing CP symptoms related to movement, posture, and balance. Physiotherapy can help improve motor skills and prevent movement problems from worsening over time. It can also allow children with CP to gain more independence with daily activities.
If you have such a child in your family or in surroundings ,then must guide them for physiotherapy
