📚 June’s Article of the Month – Management of behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia: a pragmatic scoping review of European guidelines and literature.

How are behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) managed across Europe — and where do the guidelines align or differ? This article provides an insightful overview of current European recommendations, highlighting key areas of consensus and variation.

🔍 There is strong agreement that non-pharmacological interventions, tailored to individual patient needs, should be the first-line approach in managing BPSD. Pharmacological treatments, such as short-term use of antipsychotics, antidepressants, and cognitive enhancers, are commonly recommended as adjuncts when needed. However, the use of sedatives and anti-epileptics remains inconsistent across guidelines.

💡 The review underscores the pressing need for greater harmonisation and standardisation of BPSD management across Europe to support best practices in clinical care.
