My teacher Sharathji, was never a people pleaser. He would stand up for his values and what he believed the practice was for and ultimately for the good of the student.
He didn’t care if students would show up in Mysore with expectations regarding the practice or his teachings.
He could hold students in the same postures for a full season, or for few and sometimes for years.
He would teach what was necessary, not less not more, just the right amount for each practitioner.

Ashtanga teachers sometimes get unrealistic expectations when someone wants to work with them.
Trying to learn full primary series, but taking two hours just to get to the sitting poses or feeling bad for modifying some postures but pushing through pain to get more new poses.
Feeling constantly tired to show up for a short practice recommended by the teacher but at the same time bitter because the teacher doesn’t teach full series yet.

The problem is: students identifying their worth with how much they can do in the practice or how many poses the teacher gives to them.

To be clear, there is nothing to be given. It’s to be transmitted or passed on when the time is right.

If something hurts, communicate with all details.
The teacher will guide your practice in a way that will prevent worsening the situation.
If you are constantly tired, sick or can’t commit to show up regularly, why wanting more?

If the practice is forced and rushed, body breaks.
If you avoid facing the difficulties of some postures, the same difficulties will show up twice as hard later.

The sequences of Ashtanga is a method, a system and is rooted in lineage and like anything else in the world, will not please everyone and also is not for everyone. Sharathji reflected that. He didn’t please everyone and he definitely was not for every student.

And to add I will leave here the Patanjali Yoga Sutra 1.33

“Maitrikaruna muditopekshanam sukhadukhapunyapunyavishayanam bhavanataschitta prasadanam’’

By fostering friendliness toward the happy, compassion for the suffering, joy for the virtuous, and indifference toward the wicked, the mind remains undisturbed by jealousy, fear, or negativity.

Patanjali categorizes people in the world. There can be only four types of people:

People who are happy
People who are unhappy
People who are engaged in good acts, meritorious acts (blessed people)
People who are engaged in not so good acts or demonic acts (sinful people)

Maitri

It is the development of cordiality towards those who are happy. Whenever we feel jealous of the happiness and fortune of others, we lose energy, we shrink. To rejoice in the welfare of others is to share the wealth of the world. When you feel bitter about the happiness of others, you lose all the happiness in you.

Karuna

It is to have compassion for those who have a hard time. It is more than mere sympathy, it is a stimulus that must lead to action. True compassion is powerful. It involves the question: What can I do to help? Compassion is to recognize that we are similar and we are related.

Mudita

It is to cultivate joy towards those who are virtuous.

Upeksa

To cultivate equanimity or neutrality towards those who are full of vices. BKS Iyengar said: “When you are tough towards the defects you perceive in others, when you condemn and disdain victims of vice and you use their misfortune to feel superior, you are playing with something very dangerous. Your attitude should be: ‘If it weren’t for the grace of God, I’d be there too.’ If not, you will be creating the conditions to fall. Besides, it is exhausting wasting time criticizing others. ” The yogis understand the flaws of others by observing and studying them in themselves. This practice teaches you to be benevolent to everyone.
