Your arm has a powerful coupling mechanism that helps explain how compensatory injuries develop.

Place your hand firmly on a wall and rotate your shoulder. From the shoulder’s perspective, the entire arm should rotate. But the hand isn’t moving—so where did that rotation go?

It’s balanced by an equal and opposite rotation in the forearm. When the shoulder externally rotates, the forearm pronates to keep the hand relatively still. When the shoulder internally rotates, the forearm supinates.

Problems arise when one part of this coupling is asked to work beyond the other’s ability to compensate. That’s where compensatory stress—and eventually injury—can occur.

The core group of the adductors is made up of four muscles that connect the pelvis to the femur. Due to their significant overlap, identifying their exact positions from a front view can be challenging. A more effective way to understand their layout is by examining them from the posterior side.

The most prominent muscle in this group is the Adductor Magnus. Thick and powerful, it spans nearly the entire length of the femur and forms a broad muscular wall that covers the smaller adductors beneath it.

Once the Magnus is removed, three smaller muscles become visible in a clear sequence. At the lowest level lies the Adductor Longus, followed superiorly by the Adductor Brevis. At the top sits the smallest of the group, the Adductor Minimus.

From a posterior view, these muscles appear stacked vertically. However, when viewed from an upper-anterior angle, their true structure becomes clear: they originate at nearly the same height on the femur but are arranged in layers at different depths.

Together, these four muscles form the structural foundation of the adductor group.
