As early as the 10th century, Nabulsi soap factories crafted bar soap from locally sourced olive oil, spring water, and soda ash (qilw) obtained from the barilla plant, which grows along the Jordan River. Centrally located along busy trade routes, the Nabulsi soap industry thrived for centuries as the craft was handed down from generation to generation. Several surviving soap factories, such as Kanan Nablus Soap Company, still use ancient soap making methods today and enjoy renewed popularity because their natural soaps are gentle on skin.
