Dwieście Lat Marie Skłodowska–Curie!
Marie Skłodowska–Curie is perhaps one of the most known Polish scientists. She worked as a physicist and chemist who conducted groundbreaking research on radioactivity. She was the first Woman to win the Nobel prize, and the first person to win the Nobel prize twice. Her first Nobel prize in Physics she co-won with her Husband Pierre Curie in 1903 for their theory of radioactivity. Marie won her next Nobel prize in 1911 for her discovery of Polonium and Radium.
Skłodowska–Curie was born in Congress Poland (then part of the Russian Empire) on November 7th 1867. In 1891 she left for France, eventually becoming a naturalized citizen. Although a citizen of France, Skłodowska–Curie never lost her connection to her Polish heritage. This is why she named one of her discoveries Polonium after Poland.
Marie Curie died at the age of 66 on July 4th 1934 from aplastic anemia, likely caused by exposure to radiation during her research as well as work in a field hospital during the First World War.
