Global Surgery is a rapidly developing field that brings together clinicians from all walks of life with a common goal: providing high-quality, accessible healthcare for all.

Today, Incision Poland looks at the different faces of Global Surgery and shines a light on the work they have done.

At Incision, we know that although healthcare is a human right, the reality is far from equitable. It is estimated that 5 billion people, which is more than half the world’s population. do not have access to safe and timely surgical care.

But it doesn’t have to be like this. The field of Global Surgery works tirelessly to address this inequality and bring safe healthcare to every corner of the globe.

Burnout in healthcare isn’t just a personal issue — it’s a global systems issue.

Studies have shown that female physicians face approximately a 27% higher risk of burnout compared to their male counterparts. This gap is driven by multiple systemic factors — including heavier administrative burdens, unequal distribution of caregiving responsibilities, gender bias in the workplace, fewer leadership opportunities, and the persistent pressure to balance professional and personal roles.

At the same time, disparities in surgical care continue to affect access, outcomes, and opportunities worldwide. From delayed diagnosis to limited resources, these inequities impact both patients and the healthcare professionals who serve them.

At INCISION, our mission goes beyond education — we aim to advocate for equity in surgical care, support future healthcare professionals, and raise awareness about the challenges affecting both patients and providers globally.

Did you know that approximately 50% of the world’s population lives in rural areas, yet they are served by less than 25% of doctors and only 38% of nurses? 🌍

On average, Poland has as little as 2 doctors per 1000 capita in rural regions, while cities like Warsaw have up to 3x that many.
This imbalance puts immense stress on medical professionals, who often work longer hours and handle cases outside their field of specialization with less support.

The impact falls heavily on the community, often leading to worse health outcomes, such as increased cardiovascular mortality.

Despite these challenges, rural healthcare workers continue to provide essential care. Their role is critical to the well-being of millions worldwide.

Surgical understaffing within the healthcare community is a global issue. It leads to worse outcomes both for patients and surgeons.

As medical students, we are entering a workforce already under strain.

Access to surgery remains one of the biggest global health gaps. Today, 5 billion people are unable to receive safe surgical care when they need it, leading to 16.9 million preventable deaths every year.

The 2030 global surgery goals focus on improving access, strengthening the surgical workforce, and ensuring timely care for all. Where you live should never determine whether you survive a treatable condition.
