Can excitement be confused for anxiety?
Three days ago I was running a public speaking workshop for the attendees of Mindspace University in Greece.
A few weeks before I had discussed with Vicky and Dimitris their expectations and the scope of my workshop.
We had sent to the participants all needed details.
Two hours before I had checked our agenda, my camera and audio.
Everything had been well prepared.
But thirty minutes before the workshop….
I felt an elevated heart rate and butterflies in my stomach.
My palms were sweaty.
I have run this kind of workshop dozens of times but still I feel…..
What?
STRESSED or EXCITED?
What is the difference?
The physiological symptoms are the same but how I interpret the situation matters.
Anxiety has a negative appraisal and excitement a positive one.
One is based on fears, the other based on joy.
Many athletes are trained to interpret the symptoms of anxiety as excitement.
And according to science it helps to harness this athlete approach for our lives for the sake of happiness and being more courageous.
I was excited to run the workshop for Mindspace University! And I’m excited for my next projects.
Do you have this kind of situation where you are not sure if it is anxiety or excitement?
