Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) is an inherited eye disease that leads to blindness in dogs. 🐕👀 There are two main types of photoreceptors in the retina: rods and cones. Rods detect and track motion ✨, while cones detect color 🌈. The disease is caused by the degeneration of retinal cells, both rods and cones, and initially manifests as night blindness, which leads to cataracts and complete loss of vision.
The breeds known to have genetic variants that put them at a higher risk for PRA include but are not limited to, Irish Setters, Welsh Corgis, Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers, Basenjis, Sloughi and Poodles.
Genetic tests can detect the presence of harmful mutations, which can help breeders select dogs to reduce the risk of inheriting the disease and owners to implement appropriate preventive measures. 🔎🧬

🧬☕ Projekt realizowany w konsorcjum z SGGW / Warsaw University of Life Sciences i Medvetico - szwajcarskim przedsiębiorstwem specjalizującym się w klinicznych paszach dla koni.

We are excited to announce news of another research project we will work on this year! 📣 This is Innoglobo second project funded by Narodowe Centrum Badań i Rozwoju , focusing on developing myo(miR)egen technology. Myo(miR)egen is a new generation of mitoceutics based on bio-fermented green coffee and myomiRNA-127 for post-workout regeneration in sport horses. 🧬☕ The project is carried out in a consortium with SGGW / Warsaw University of Life Sciences and Medvetico - a Swiss company specializing in clinical horse feeds.

Canine hip dysplasia (CHD) is the abnormal development and growth of a dog’s hip joint. 🐕‍🦺 Hip dysplasia occurs most commonly in large breed dogs, such as Great Dane, Saint Bernard, Rottweiler, German Shepherd Dog and Labrador Retriever, but the truth is it can happen to dogs of any size. 😭 The cause of canine hip dysplasia is multifactorial, however, genetics is the major risk factor. 🧬 Factors such as excessive growth rate, types of exercise, improper weight, and unbalanced nutrition can magnify this genetic predisposition. Dogs with hip dysplasia often show clinical signs of lameness of the hind limbs, pain and muscle weakness (atrophy) running with a "jumping bunny" gait and unwillingness to stand up or jump.

At this point, more than a dozen genes within which mutations increase the risk of the disease have been identified. Genetic tests can detect the presence of harmful mutations, which can help breeders select dogs to reduce the risk of inheriting the disease and owners to implement appropriate preventive measures. 🔬🔍

The balance between the harmful and positive bacteria that compose the gut microbiome is very important for the health of our pets. 🐾⚖️
An imbalance occurs when there are too few positive bacteria, too many harmful bacteria or when the diversity of the microbiome is too poor. 🦠 Factors that can affect a disruption in this balance, i.e. lead to a state of dysbiosis, include inappropriate diet, stress, medications - especially antibiotics, and disease. In cases where the balance of the microbiome is disturbed in a cat or dog, digestive problems and eating disorders manifesting as diarrhea, constipation, bad breath, general weakness and shedding of the fur can occur. An imbalance of the microbiome can also be the cause of allergies. 😿🐶
Such temporary disturbances can usually be restored by adjusting the diet and using probiotics. 🍲💊 This will enable the composition of microorganisms in the digestive system to become stabilised. However, when the state of disturbance persists over a long period of time, it can lead to the development of inflammation of sections of the digestive tract.💢

Today, let's take a look at these not-so-friendly companions of our pets.💢🦠 In some cases, an infection can develop in the digestive system, resulting in an increase in pathogenic bacteria.❌ Such situations usually manifest themselves in cats and dogs with diarrhea and general weakness.🤧😿 If the infection is detected quickly there is unlikely to be any cause for concern, as it can be cured quickly. However, the digestive problems of our pets should not be ignored, as chronic and untreated problems can lead to serious disorders such as dysbiosis, enteritis or leaky gut syndrome. 🩺👨‍⚕️

The digestive systems of our four-legged companions are populated by billions of microorganisms. 🦠🐶🐱 Some of these are harmful to them, but some are beneficial and even essential for the proper digestion and health, and it is about the second group that we will say a few words today. 🐾💚 Beneficial bacteria help in the digestion and absorption of ingredients, produce metabolites that are profitable for the health of dogs and cats and can interact with the immune system to promote the health of the host.✨ A deficiency of these bacteria can lead to a variety of disorders, including and vomiting, which is why it is important to take care of the condition of our pets' microbiome. ❗️

Did you know that Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) is revolutionizing the not only human medicine, but also veterinary medicine? 🌐🔬 NGS helps us uncover the secrets within our furry friends' DNA, unveiling potential genetic diseases and guiding responsible breeding practices. 🧬🔍 It also enables veterinarians to customize therapies, ensuring your pets receive the most effective and personalized care. NGS is also very effective when it comes to identifying infectious diseases. 🦠 By comprehensive analysis of pets genes and microbiome it guides personalized nutrition plans for boosting their health. 🍏🐕🐈

Today we wanted to give you an idea of how analysis using NGS is carried out.🔬🚀 It all starts with collecting samples from which we can then isolate genetic material in the form of DNA or RNA. 🧬 The samples used for isolation can vary greatly - from swabs, to tissue fragments, even faeces - basically wherever we find cells we find DNA and RNA! 🧫👩‍🔬 From the isolated DNA or RNA, a library is then created and sequencing can begin. The data obtained from sequencing can provide us with an enormous amount of information - concerning genetic diseases, changes in gene expression, bacterial and viral infections and much more. 💻

Next-generation sequencing (NGS) is a technology for determining DNA or RNA sequences to study genetic variation associated with diseases or other biological phenomena. 🧬🔬 The speed, throughput and accuracy of NGS have completely revolutionized genetic analysis and provided new applications in genomic and clinical research, reproductive health, as well as environmental, agricultural and forensic sciences. 🚀🧪 NGS allows detection of all types of changes within genomic DNA - single nucleotide changes, deletions, insertions,… But what does this sequencing actually mean? 🤷‍♀️🤷 Today and in the next few posts we will briefly explain it to You! ✨
