In our state (of Florida), there are a few pathways to formally honor someone with a day of remembrance…
To my understanding, the most permanent option is through legislative action, where the Florida Legislature designates a commemorative day in state statute (Chapter 683, Florida Statutes)…
Another option is a gubernatorial proclamation, which can recognize a specific day annually without requiring legislation…
There is also the possibility of local recognition through city or county commissions….
As I reflect on the life and legacy of my (our) dear friend (THEE 🐍🍊🌴Honorable Vice Mayor) Nancy Metayer, I feel deeply called to explore how we, as a community, might formally commemorate our sister Nancy Metayer in a way that feels aligned with who she was and what she stood for.
I don’t think I’m the only one who’d love to see her honored annually on Earth Day… a day that so closely reflects her commitment to environmental justice, health equity, community, and collective care.
I think a post office in her name is……..considerate, but not truly reflective of all that Nancy and her legacy represented.
I feel like if we were to commemorate our beloved sister every Earth Day, we’d bring her passion back into our Earth Day initiatives.
Let me be clear: Nothing will or could ever replace our beloved Nancy or her impact- we gon’ feel this loss for generations, but maybe…
By creating intentional space each year to invest in a more sustainable earth and just future in Nancy’s name would be a powerful way to carry her legacy forward and ensure her murderer isn’t centered in this tragedy.
Her legacy matters just as much as her name: THEE HONORABLE VICE MAYOR NANCY METAYER.
I’ve been struggling due to this loss and I’m frankly heartbroken by all of the rumors, gossiping, and slander when our sister’s endowment fund has barely raised 20% of the goal… Honestly, yall, I know it’s a recession, but we should have met that 250K goal already.
