Leaders Unite at VA Caribbean to Advance Care for Our Veterans

The VA Caribbean Healthcare System (VACHS) proudly hosted the Executive Leadership Committee (EXCOM), a high-level group composed of leaders from across the VISN 8, along with key managers from Nursing Services and the Clinical Contact Center. This committee, comparable to a hospital Board of Directors, convenes to review critical priorities, including budget oversight, enterprise-wide contracts, safety stories, and the sharing of best practices across facilities.

“As leaders, we have a responsibility to ensure that every decision we make strengthens the care we provide to our Veterans. Hosting EXCOM allows us to align, learn from one another, and continue building a system that delivers the highest standard of care for our Veterans” said VACHS Executive Director Antonio Sánchez.

Under the leadership of Executive Director Sánchez, VACHS welcomed the opportunity to showcase its operations and teams. During their visit, EXCOM members engaged directly with staff from key programs such as Whole Health, Women’s Clinic, Spinal Cord Injury, and Urology, gaining valuable insight into the high-quality, Veteran-centered care delivered every day.

Hosting EXCOM reflects VACHS’ ongoing commitment to collaboration, transparency, and continuous improvement in service to our Veterans and the broader community.

VHA Under Secretary Engages with VA Caribbean Teams, Reinforcing National Focus on Veteran Centered Care

This week, Antonio Sánchez, Executive Director of the VA Caribbean Healthcare System (VACHS), welcomed John J. Bartrum, Under Secretary for Health for the Veterans Health Administration (VHA), who met with staff, clinicians, and volunteers to gain firsthand insight into the exceptional care provided to Veterans across the region.

During his visit, Mr. Bartrum toured key clinical and operational areas, including the Women’s Clinic, Spinal Cord Injury Service, the Emergency Department, Supply Processing and Distribution, and Nutrition and Food Service. His conversations with frontline teams showcased the dedication, expertise, and passion driving our mission every day.

“The Under Secretary’s engagement underscores a nationwide commitment to delivering high quality, Veteran centered care—an effort he leads at the national level in alignment with VA Secretary Doug Collins’ vision. His presence reaffirmed the importance of collaboration, innovation, and readiness as we continue to honor and serve those who served our nation,” Executive Director Sánchez said.

The visit served as a powerful reminder of the leadership that guides the VA at every level—from the national direction provided by Under Secretary Bartrum to the steadfast local stewardship of Executive Director Sánchez. Together, their commitment to excellence continues to shape a culture of readiness, compassion, and Veteran centered care across VACHS and throughout the nation.

VA Caribbean Hosts VISN 8 Emergency Preparedness Exercise, Strengthening Unified Response Efforts

This week, the VA Caribbean Healthcare System (VACHS) hosted a VISN 8 Level Hospital Incident Command exercise designed to reinforce our network’s ability to respond effectively during large scale emergencies, our readiness to respond as a unified organization in the face of a major disaster. The tabletop drill brought together all VISN 8 facilities, enhancing coordination, communication, and rapid decision-making across our network.

“Having led through the challenges of Hurricane María, I understand firsthand the importance of prevention, mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery. Our Veterans and community depend on us in times of uncertainty, and it is our duty to stand ready—together and capable—when they need us”, said Antonio Sánchez, Executive Director of VACHS.

Preparedness remains essential to fulfilling our mission, ensuring we can deliver safe, timely, and coordinated care to the Veterans and the communities we serve in the Caribbean.

Our New Mission, Vision, High Reliability Organizational Pillars and Goals | 2019 – 2024

The VA Caribbean Healthcare System’s Strategic Plan is a transformational process and roadmap to guide our efforts towards becoming a High-Reliability Organization (HRO) and incorporating HRO tenants into our culture and service delivery: Leadership Commitment, Safety Culture and Continuous Process Improvement. Our strategic plan will guide us in creating lasting change in how we ultimately serve our Veterans, their families, caregivers, survivors, and our communities. Our driving forces are the Four Statutory Missions of the VA: Healthcare, Education, Research, and Emergency Management.

In addition, we will embrace and incorporate VA Secretary Wilke’s four priorities into our strategic planning process: Customer Service, MISSION Act, the New Electronic Health Record (EHR), and VA Business Systems Transformation. An integral component to our success, past-present-future will be our employee’s engagement. To quote VA Secretary Wilke, “Transformation will be evidenced by an empowered VA workforce ably serving Veterans in the field with world-class customer service and improved Veteran outcomes.” In the coming days, we will also be highlighting the great work of our employees, how leadership is responding to the 2019 All Employee Survey (AES), and how we as a health system translate feedback of our employees into actions and results.

I am looking forward to the future of our VA Caribbean Healthcare System, with the ultimate goals to be the healthcare destination of choice for our Veterans, provide world class customer service and to be the “Best Place to Work” for our employees.

Sincerely,
