We tend to think that depression and other mental illnesses are medical conditions caused by problems in the brain, and that framing them this way reduces stigma and leads to better treatment.

However, Joanna Moncrieff argues that this is deeply mistaken, and that medicalising mental distress can actually increase stigma, undermine hope of recovery, and distract us from what really helps.

Drawing on science, philosophy, and the history of pharmaceutical marketing, join Joanna in the search for a new and better model of mental health.

Joanna Moncrieff is a British psychiatrist and academic. She is Professor of Critical and Social Psychiatry at University College London and a leading figure in the Critical Psychiatry Network.

Participants will learn practical interventions such as grief gardens, memory paths, symbolic rituals, and legacy projects grounded in grief theory, developmental care, and trauma-responsive practice.

Jay Haley (1923–2007) was a central figure in the development of strategic and family therapy and a key contributor to the wider recognition of Milton H. Erickson’s work. Through his writing, teaching, and clinical leadership, Haley helped reshape how therapists understand change, responsibility, and intervention.

At the 2000 Evolution of Psychotherapy conference, Haley addressed questions that remain central to contemporary practice today, including how therapists navigate competing models, increasing institutional pressures, and the demand for effective, time-limited treatment. He challenged clinicians to focus less on theoretical allegiance and more on what actually produces change in the present moment. Haley's conference sessions are available for purchase through our website.

📖 The Milton H. Erickson Foundation also publishes "Changing Directives: The Strategic Therapy of Jay Haley", edited by Jeffrey K. Zeig. This book offers a multifaceted portrait of Haley’s clinical thinking and lasting influence. https://www.erickson-foundation.org/books/p/changing-directives-the-strategic-therapy-of-jay-haley-1?rq=haley
