Researchers studying people with major depression found that cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) can do more than change thoughts it can physically alter the brain. In a study involving 20 CBT sessions, brain scans revealed growth in grey matter, particularly in the amygdala, which processes emotions, and the anterior hippocampus, involved in memory and emotional regulation. Participants who showed the most growth also experienced the greatest improvements in controlling overwhelming emotions.
Interestingly, some brain areas shrank, suggesting a reorganization where helpful circuits are strengthened while unhelpful ones are pruned. This demonstrates that CBT promotes neuroplasticity, allowing the brain to rewire itself for better mental health. The findings highlight that “talk therapy” isn’t just psychological it can drive real structural changes in the brain.
