*10 Tips to Help Start Labor*
(Full-term pregnancies ONLY)
1. S*x - triggers the release of oxytocin, which is a major hormone that induces labor. Semen contains prostaglandins, which helps to ripen the cervix and cause it to dilate.
2. Ni**le Stimulation - stimulation of the ni***es causes the release of oxytocin, which causes the uterus to contract.
3. Exercising/Walking/Birth Ball - when a full term pregnant person walks, exercises or uses the birth ball, it helps the baby press down onto the cervix causing it to ripen and dilate. It also encourages the baby to be in the ideal position with head downward.
4. Evening Primrose Oil- helps to ripen the cervix. It is advised that you ONLY take it after your 37th week, orally and vaginally.
5. Pineapple - contains bromelain, which is an enzyme that helps soften the cervix, and speeds up labor. The core of the pineapple contains the most bromelain and must be consumed in order for it to be most effective.
6. Red Raspberry Leaf Tea- this acts as an uterine tonic and helps prepare the womb for labor by softening the cervix. Can be used b4 term,
7. Acupuncture - this ancient practice has been used for 1000s of years to induce labor. Thin needles are inserted into certain parts of the body that triggers the activity of the uterus.
8. Blue/Black Cohosh - Scientific studies show that these treatments do trigger strong uterine contractions, but may also be seriously harmful, potentially leading to serious labor and birth complications, if you do not know what you are doing. (Consult an herbalist or other healthcare prof. for more information on its usage and if its right for you)
9. Dates- Eating dates may lead to cervical ripening, decrease need for Pitocin, and help minimize post-birth blood loss.
10. Castor Oil - The use of this dates as far back as Ancient Egypt. It is thought to work by promoting the release of prostaglandins, which may trigger cervical dilation. It may also cause nausea and diarrhea as it stimulates the intestines.
