Fistula Protect is one of the 10 startups that will participate in the Patient Innovation Bootcamp 2025!

Fistula Protect designs and manufactures patient-matched medical devices—personalized protectors that shield arteriovenous (AV) fistulas from life-threatening injuries. These CE-marked Class I medical devices are tailored to fit various arm and fistula shapes, providing reliable protection against impacts, cuts, and harmful compression during everyday activities.
If an AV fistula is injured, a dialysis patient can bleed out within minutes. Fistula Protect serves as a crucial safeguard, helping to prevent such emergencies. This solution ensures both safety and peace of mind, empowering dialysis patients to live more freely and actively.

🎉We're thrilled to announce that the “Patient Innovation: Inspiring stories about impactful innovations, developed by patients, caregivers and collaborators” book written by the Patient Innovation team in collaboration with many innovators and with special participation of Nobel Laureate Sir. Richard Roberts, Eric von Hippel, and Hans Jorgen Wiberg, is officially HERE!

This book compiles a decade's worth of groundbreaking solutions born from the ingenuity and resilience of patients, caregivers, and their collaborators worldwide. It's a testament to the power and potential of patient innovation and of the shared knowledge in healthcare.

The book will be officially launched during the Open and User Innovation Conference in Lisbon next week!

Playphysio is one of the startups that will participate in this year’s Patient Innovation Bootcamp!

When Will Jackson's daughter was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis (CF) at just 18 months old, their family was thrown into a daily routine of complex treatments. By age nine, she faced over 180 therapy blows and more than 40 pills every day. The burden was immense, not just for her but for the entire household. Physiotherapy sessions became a battleground—stressful, exhausting, and met with resistance. One morning, after yet another argument, Will had enough. There had to be a better way.
That’s when Playphysio was born. Playphysio turns routine respiratory therapy into an interactive and engaging experience through gamification.

📢 Exciting News from Patient Innovation! 📢

We are delighted to announce three dynamic new members of our leadership team!

Please join us in warmly welcoming Ana Rodrigues as our new President of the Board and Chief Medical Officer.
Ana is an Assistant Professor of Epidemiology and Rheumatology at Nova Medical School and at the Hospital do Santo Espírito de Angra do Heroísmo. She also leads the Rheumatology Unit at Lusíadas. We are honored that Ana has accepted the challenge of joining our leadership team, bringing with her deep expertise and a strong commitment to healthcare innovation.

We’re equally excited to congratulate Gemma Tria and Margarida Oliveira on their well-deserved promotions to Co-Executive Directors!

Gemma Tria holds a Bachelor’s degree in Social and Cultural Anthropology from the University of Barcelonaand currently serves as Platform Manager at Patient Innovation, playing a central role in day-to-day operations and community engagement.

Margarida Oliveira is a recent graduate of the International Master’s in Management at Nova SBE and an undergraduate from Copenhagen Business School. Over the past year, she has served Patient Innovation as our Digital Communications Officer.

We wish Ana, Gemma, and Margarida great success in their new roles and look forward to continuing to build this project together!

We are also sincerely grateful to all the individuals who have served—or are now joining—the governing bodies of the Patient Innovation Association. Their support is essential to our mission.

It is with mixed emotions, we announce the departure of Helena Canhão and Maria João Jacinto from Patient Innovation.

Helena Canhão, our co-founder, co-President, and Chief Medical Officer, who co-launched Patient Innovation in 2015 and laid the foundation for all we have accomplished, has been appointed Secretary of State for Science and Innovation. With this new role in the 25th Portuguese Government, Helena has stepped down from all her positions at Patient Innovation. Her appointment fills us with immense pride, and while we will deeply miss her leadership, we are profoundly grateful for her extraordinary contributions. Patient Innovation would not be what it is today without her vision, dedication, and tireless effort. We wish Helena every success as she joins the Portuguese Government.

We also bid farewell to Maria João Jacinto, our Executive Director, who has been appointed Adjunct to the Secretary of State. Over the past five years, Maria João has been a driving force behind Patient Innovation, skillfully coordinating our activities and ensuring seamless operations. Her commitment and leadership have been invaluable, and we are sincerely thankful for her remarkable work.

We could not be prouder of Helena and Maria João. Their dedication, vision, and leadership have left a lasting impact on Patient Innovation, and we extend our warmest wishes as they embark on these exciting new chapters in public service.

They may be joining the government, but their mark on Patient Innovation will never leave us and will continue to inspire everything we do moving forward..

As we turn the page to a new chapter in Patient Innovation’s journey, we will soon be announcing our new leadership structure.

This journey brought together visionary startups, expert mentors, and an international network dedicated to transforming life sciences and healthcare innovation.
This unique program empowered life science startups with:
💡 Weekly mentorship and training (Jan–Mar)
🌍 An intensive U.S. immersion at Carnegie Mellon University (Apr)
📈 Final workshops and strategy showcases in Lisbon (Jun)

Participants fine-tuned their go-to-market strategies and explored U.S. market entry, supported by Pittsburgh’s dynamic life sciences ecosystem.
