What if you could detect cancer from a drop of blood?

Or use viruses to fight antibiotic-resistant bacteria?

Or even test drugs on a chip instead of an animal?

At INL, this is the work in progress.

In honour of World Health Day, celebrated last week, we explain how researchers at INL are advancing medical research.

For researchers, the first time you walk into a lab is unforgettable.

Every month, INL gives university students that moment.

From January to March, 229 students from Universidade de Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro, Universidade do Minho , Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, and ATEE - Association for Teacher Education in Europe walked through our doors.

Some in love with physics.
Others hoping to one day become biomedical engineers.

But all of them watched someone light up talking about the thing they've dedicated their life to.

To the 51 INLers who paused their work to invest in someone at the very beginning of theirs: thank you!

Jérôme is back to the grid!

This time, to explain how a new INL study is paving the way for affordable, more reliable and eco-friendly energy storage solutions.

INL is officially part of SPINS, the Semiconductor-based Quantum Pilot Line established under the EU Chips Act!

Coordinated by imec, this initiative is built to advance Europe's capacity and strategic autonomy in quantum technologies.

As a partner, INL brings its expertise in beyond-CMOS technologies, particularly spintronics, adding new degrees of freedom to control and read qubits with greater precision.

This improvement represents a significant milestone for the sacalibility of quantum computing, and one we're proud to contribute to.

The Falling Walls Lab Portugal is back to INL and applications are now open!

On 9 September, INL hosts one of the most exciting pitch competitions for early-stage researchers.

To participate you'll need:

A breakthrough concept with positive impact for science & society
A compelling, well-structured pitch
A timer set to three minutes

The winner earns a spot among 100 global finalists, competing at the Lab Global Finale in Berlin.

Are you ready to pitch?

Could you explain 80,000 words in just three minutes?
Six PhD students at INL just did.

At the Three Minute Thesis Competition, we challenged our early‑stage researchers to convert years of complex, technical work into a clear and compelling three‑minute talk.

But there was a catch (or two):
Participants were only allowed one slide and a three minute timer to make their point.

And even though the rules were simple, the exercise wasn't.

Behind this minimalist format was a bigger goal: to push researchers to communicate their research in the most accessible manner.

A huge congratulations to Rosa Monteiro, Carla Teixeira, and Victor Duarte for earning their place in the finale.

Yesterday, Prof. Duncan Haldane, Nobel Laureate in Physics, was awarded an Honoris Causa Doctorate by the Universidade do Minho.

The honour recognises Duncan's outstanding contributions to quantum physics, particularly in condensed matter physics, including the Luttinger liquid theory and the Haldane model.

Representing INL, Director General Prof. Clivia Sotomayor delivered a speech celebrating the breakthroughs and remarkable career of this pioneering theoretical physicist.

The ceremony precedes a public lecture that Prof. Haldane will deliver tomorrow at INL, marking 10 years since his reception of the Nobel Prize in Physics.

Scientists are born from curiosity.
So we went to the place where curiosity is off-the-charts: schools.

Since the start of 2026, our researchers have visited 12 schools and connected with nearly 400 students.

Except outreach is rarely measured in numbers.
It's measured in firsts.

The first time a 4th grader programs a robot.
The first time a 10th grader hears about cancer research.
The first time a pre-schooler discovers that science is as fun as barbies or trucks.

These moments happened at: Colégio La Salle Barcelos, EB Santa Cruz da Trapa, EB Carvalhais, EB Garapoa, EB Figueiredo, Escola Básica e Secundária de Viatodos, Alto Minho Science Fest, EB de Friestas, Epralima Escola, EB Pedreira, Colégio Leonardo Da Vinci, and Colégio Marca d Água.

And they were made possible by the INLers who packed science into backpacks and brought it to the classroom: Vinícius Silva, João A. Rodrigues, João Henriques, Ana Malheiro, Miguel Xavier, Catarina Moura, Filipe Alves, Iliona Wolfowicz, Oliver Schraidt, Elvira Paz, and Mariam Debs.

Thank you, genuinely.

Swipe to see what science looks like through a child's eyes.

P.S.: Science will go further if you join in, follow INL.

And warm thank you to Native Scientists for partnering with us in four of these visits!

Protecting our water is a scientific responsibility.

This World Water Day, we thought we'd share how the Espiña research group at INL uses nanotechnology to do exactly that, and you're just one swipe away.

Real-time water monitoring devices and econanosafety research await you.

In 1973, he took a class on advanced quantum mechanics taught by Phil Anderson.

In 2016, he won the Nobel Prize in Physics, alongside David J. Thouless and J. Michael Kosterlitz.

Next week, he will deliver a public lecture at INL.

His story started long before his invaluable theoretical discoveries in topological phase transitions and topological phases of matter.

But the last 10 years have been a period of remarkable acceleration, and that kind of progress deserves to be celebrated.

In his own words, Prof. Dr. Haldane will share the journey both he and the field of quantum physics have travelled since that milestone in a lecture named "Topological Matter: from discovery to today".

And you're invited to be part of it.

Come take a seat at our auditorium on 29 March and explore how his research is influencing tomorrow's technologies, including quantum computing, spintronics, and energy-efficient electronic devices.

Tendon injuries affect millions of people, and many never fully recover.

Simão, a researcher at INL, is working to change that.

He develops nanoparticles that guide stem cells to damaged tissue, making repair smarter and more targeted.

His work was recognised with the ON Foundation / TERMIS Education Grant 2026, giving him the opportunity to present at TERMIS-EU Conference in Spain.

His research is called "Mapping PIEZO mechanotransduction with submolecular-precision nanoswitches".

Read more about Simão's work and application process here: https://inl.int/inl-researcher-wins-on-termis-education-grant-2026/

And leave him a word of encouragement for his upcoming oral communication at TERMIS-EU.
