Do you ever feel like you're on a roll, in a flow state, or just having a good run of luck?

Momentum is everything, but momentum goes both ways. When it’s with me, I feel unstoppable. When it’s going against me, everything feels hard.

One thing that I’ve learned is to take full advantage of good momentum when I have it. This means fully committing and going all in. When I do this, I can cover a significant amount of ground, making incredible progress in a short period of time.

I’ve applied this strategy when trying to recover from back pain and with several other aspects of my health. I’ve never regretted going all in and building unstoppable momentum.

Find momentum where you can and then commit.

Are you trying to recover and heal from back pain but feeling like you just want to give up? It can be hard to keep going when it feels like nothing is working!

I've been there, and I know what this feels like.

One thing that's important to remember is that things will improve, and this will get easier. If you're committed to finding a solution and prepared to put the work in, then you will eventually find a way forward.

You could be closer to turning the corner than you think. And when you look back, you'll be so glad that you decided to keep going.

I'm certain of that.

When you're dealing with chronic pain or a long-term injury, it can really change your perspective. For me, it happened in my late twenties when I was struggling with back pain and sciatica. 😔

While performance will always be a goal, my focus has shifted towards longevity. After all, what matters most to me now is being able to continue doing what I love for as long as possible.

And for me, that's surfing. 🏄‍♂️

Longevity demands a different mindset and approach: one that's more balanced, less intense, and adaptable to the changing needs of your body.

So far, choosing to prioritise longevity has paid off. I feel fantastic, and I'm able to hit the waves regularly without any issues. I may not be the world's greatest surfer, but as long as I can keep on surfing, I'll be happy.

PS Not me in the picture. This is photo is taken when we did some filming a few years back with Sam Bleakley, and he can actually surf incredibly well.

Do you understand your back pain? 🤔

If not, then perhaps it's time to start paying attention to the subtle nuances of your back pain condition. This small shift in awareness could make a massive difference in terms of self-managing your pain and staying on the path toward healing and recovery. 🌱

Chronic (long-term) back pain typically follows patterns. There are triggers and things that can offer relief. These are often unique to the individual and influenced by lifestyle, injury, and the stage of your recovery journey.

Learning to recognize these patterns can be incredibly beneficial for prevention. It empowers you to make informed decisions and navigate the healing process more effectively. 📝

So, grab a notebook and start jotting down your daily experiences with back pain. You'll soon start to uncover subtle but crucial information about your back pain.

For example:

Is your back pain always worse after taking the dogs out for a walk? Do your dogs pull on the lead? 🐕
Is it more intense after a night of drinking? Could this be dehydration? 🍻
Does it flare up after a Sunday afternoon nap on the sofa? Could this be a twisted sleep position? 💤
Do you feel better after back pain exercises but worse after a run? Could this be ankle or hip mobility issues?🏃‍♂️

You get the idea! Give it a try for a few weeks. My bet is that you'll gain a much deeper understanding of your back pain, empowering you to make better choices and take control of your recovery journey. 🌟

Knowledge is power.

When I finally realised that mindset plays a massive role in healing and recovery, I developed several strategies to help me to maintain a positive mindset.

Especially when things were hard!

One technique was to acknowledge and celebrate any and every win, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant. This tricked my mind into thinking that I was always making progress, even when I wasn’t.

This could be anything from getting out of the car with a bit less back pain than the day before, or managing to put just one sock on without help.

It didn’t matter. A win was a win.

If you look hard enough, you’ll find small wins everywhere. Celebrate them.
