Without a doubt, the number one cause of lameness we see in horses is infection of the frog. Left untreated, these bacterial infections can cause crippling lameness, yet (in our experience) are rarely recognized by veterinarians and farriers; instead, the resultant lameness is usually mislabeled as "navicular." The "split" extending up the back of the foot in the left-hand photo is not normal, and is an indicator of a fairly advanced bacterial infection. Likewise, the deep crevice seen in the central sulcus of the frog in the right-hand photo will be foul-smelling, yield a black, tarry-looking substance when cleaned with a hoof pick, and often produce a pain response when the crevice is probed to its extents.

Treatment is usually straightforward, and, in our experience, healing time is more dependent on regular care rather than the specific product used to treat. Our clients generally have good success treating every 2-3 days with (human) triple antibiotic ointment (not cream), particularly when cotton or gauze is carefully packed into the crevice following application of the ointment. It can take many weeks for the tissue to completely heal, and infections often recur without diligent preventative care following healing.

So...if your horse seems "off" and the vet or farrier tells you it's "navicular," carefully check the frogs for signs of infection - it may well be the only thing amiss with your horse!
