Ear Infections in Adults: What’s Different?
Not just “kids’ problems” — causes, symptoms and care look different in adults.

Outer vs middle ear 🏷️
Adults often get otitis externa (canal skin inflamed): pain on moving the ear, itch, discharge.
Middle ear issues feel like deep pressure, muffled hearing, often after a cold.

Adult risk factors ⚠️
Recent colds, allergic rhinitis, smoke exposure, earbuds/hearing aids rubbing, water in the ear, eczema/psoriasis, diabetes or lowered immunity.

Pain relief if suitable, keep the canal dry, pause in-ear devices on the sore side, clean moulds/domes before reuse, gentle swallow/yawn to equalise after colds.

Don’ts 🚫
No cotton buds or ear candles. Don’t start old ear drops if you don’t know the eardrum status. Avoid forceful, repeated Valsalva. No swimming with painful discharge.

When to book / red flags 🩺
Still sore or blocked >48 hours, hearing stays dull, or you’re unsure? Book a review.

Cold-to-warm air makes droplets on mics/tubes. Wipe aids when you come indoors and use a nightly dry box/dehumidifier or your Signia charging case if it includes drying.

Cold saps power. Keep spares warm in a pocket; don’t leave aids in the car. Fully charge your Signia devices before heading out; a small power bank helps on long days.

Check fit, tubes and domes 🧩🔎
Cold can stiffen tubing and loosen domes. If tubing looks yellowed/brittle or sound is muffled, book a quick refresh. Ensure domes seal comfortably.

Hats, scarves and rain 🧢🌧️
Choose beanies that don’t press microphones; watch for scarf rustle. If caught in rain, pat-dry gently and use the dry box overnight. Never use a hairdryer.

Congestion can upset middle-ear pressure — here’s how to feel better, safely.

A cold can swell the Eustachian tube (the pressure valve to your middle ear). Result: blocked ear, dull hearing, popping or mild pain.

What helps at home 🧰✅
Rest, fluids, paracetamol/ibuprofen (if suitable), saline nasal spray, gentle yawns/swallows/chewing. Keep the ear dry; avoid poking or cotton buds.

Avoid these to stay safe 🚫
Don’t fly or dive if your ears won’t clear. Don’t use random ear drops if you’re unsure about the eardrum. No ear candles. Avoid constant forceful Valsalva.

Severe pain, high fever, foul-smelling discharge, hearing drop that doesn’t lift, or symptoms >48–72h with no improvement — book a review.
