Bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) is a species that we can see year-round in the Azores.
If you think on a dolphin, this is usually the species that you think about because unfortunately, is the one most often chose to have on captivity.

In the Azores, the s***m whales are often spotted in groups (called pods). Pods include females and their young, while males may roam solo or move from group to group. Females and calves remain in tropical or subtropical waters all year long, and apparently practice communal childcare. Males migrate to higher latitudes, and head back towards the equator to breed.

Do you know that the blowhole of the s***m whale is highly skewed to the left of the head? That helps the loockouts to distinguish these whales from others when they are on the surface.

Yesterday we saw for the first time in the season the short-finned pilot whales (Globicephala macrorhynchus). Do you know that they are also called the cheetahs of the deep sea? They can do sprints of 9m/s at depths between 500-1000m to catch their preys.

Whale Watching

The Azores is one of the top 10 spots of the world to do whale watching.

We offer two daily whale and dolphin watching tours at 8:30pm and 14pm.

The tours are leaded by passionate marine biologists that will give you a briefing before every departure about the cetaceans of the Azores.
